Why This Must Be Read: I think this is a shiny new author, and definitely one worth encouraging! Here is a superb OC in the immediacy of second-person POV: a civilian going through Stargate, with all the trauma and determination and courage you can imagine.

As I commented, I am now going to mentally insert Callie into every background scene in the SGC, because this short fic brings her vividly to life.



The base psychologist asks if you still want to work on a gate team, to work with Evans and Takeda, or if you’d prefer to stay earthside.

“Yes,” you say, voice hoarse, “I want.” You don’t know why you agree, don't even know if you really do want to, but it's as if you can’t do anything else. You wonder if this is how Sergent Takeda feels when he talks about the gate, about his time in Atlantis, about his ten years at the SGC. As if there’s no way he can leave it behind for good, as much a part of him as his hands or feet.

Why This Must Be Read: OW OW OW OW OW

...Yeah, that and wow sums up my feelings while I read this new and fresh contribution to the Shades of Grey totality of fic.

So many of us tend to focus on the splintering of friendships and the team in the wake of the lies and breach of trust in this episode. But what happens when you focus on the impact these events would have had on the SGC itself?

I don't necessarily agree with every characterization in this (I like Travell), but it is bleakly, realistically, superbly done.

Why This Must Be Read: Part of me thinks this reads so well to me because, like Sam in this story, I am an outsider to SGA trying to work it out. But most of me thinks this is simply a fantastic, gripping fic that both SGA and SG-1 fans can love!

This is early Sam-in-command-of-Atlantis, still dealing with she's-not-Elizabeth-Weir resentment from the Atlantis team. This is Sam, dealing with a mystery and bad guys with courage and brains and sheer determination. This is Sam and Teyla being awesome together and the team working flawlessly. Add some delightful SG-1 crossing over with superb characterization, and you've got a long, satsifying read that'll definitely leave you wanting more!

One final note: the author labels this as "S/J, but could be read with gen goggles." There was only a single line or two in the final paragraphs that required me to settle my gen goggles firmly on my nose to read as casual male/female friendship, but for Sam/Jack fans, consider that aspect a bonus.

Why This Must Be Read: Oldskool classic fic! So oldskool, in fact, that it contains two of the fanon tropes that usually have me hitting the back button with enthusiasm. Yet I read this long, satisfying story at a gulp, loving that this was canon and yet gave us such a fascinating alternate perspective!

I've always firmly believed that if anyone is working at the SGC, they are competent and the best of the best. Felger is the exception that proves the rule. So when Marzipan portrays Dr. Mackenzie, even in the midst of Legacy, as an intelligent, competent doctor...

Here is Mackenzie: professional, dedicated, genuinely doing his best. And here is Jack and Teal'c and Sam, driven to somehow cure Daniel through sheer mental effort. And here is Daniel: trapped in hallucinations, just aware enough to know his mind is disintegrating.

Everyone is wonderful here. Everyone. Settle down and read this one with enjoyment.

Why This Must Be Read: For someone with a genuinely tragic childhood, Daniel is remarkably resilient and has incredible faith in people. That had to come from somewhere...

This is a fabulous perspective on Claire Jackson and her strength of conviction and the values she instilled in her son. With an extra twist of what-could-have-been, this is kidfic at its best.

Why This Must Be Read: This glorious, intense story is long. And incredibly teamy. Full of Jack and Daniel friendship, and scientific puzzles, and Teal'c sheer stubbornness, and Sam doing her best (and beyond) for her team, and Daniel taking his usual flying leaps of logic, and courage, and drama...

I love each and every one of them here. Bill Lee shines, Janet has a great cameo, and the comfort of the final scene is an absolute joy. Make sure you've got the time to read this all in one sitting, because you won't be able to stop!

I love her determination, her courage, and driving need for discovery. No matter what the circumstances, that aspect of Sam never changes.

Why This Must Be Read: I love a good outside perspective. This retelling of Prototype, written by the queen of episode-related fic, allows us to see the action through the eyes of Dr. Carolyn Lam. You'll appreciate her civilian views of the moral dilemmas, her surreptitious Cliffs' Notes of names and events, and her own strength of character throughout the drama that plays out in her infirmary.

Why This Must Be Read: The events of 48 Hours may have been instantaneous to Teal'c, but who knows what happens in a wormhole? In this fascinating crossover with Farscape, Teal'c spends those two days struggling to find the path to his own reality... and exploring some fascinating AUs at the same time. The whole thing is excellent reading, but the last two paragraphs are my favorite!

Reccer's note: Speaking as someone who only knows that Cam and Vala's actors had roles on Farscape, you can be safely assured that you can read this without any familiary with the fandom.

Why This Must Be Read: Out of necessity, this is a mystery crossover. What makes it so gripping is the characterization: Jack as the competent, intelligent general of the SGC, his rapport and trust in his people (especially Sam), the reactions of the various characters, and the realistic fusion of SG-1 with a certain movie series that you needn't have actually watched (I haven't, personally) in order to recognize. Great apocafic, and a really good read.
