Why This Must Be Read: This AU of Grace has been on my to-rec list for a while, and with a certain tidbit of science news being reported, I really couldn't resist. :)

Ultranos always write a superb Sam, and here she is at her best: courage and determination in the face of losing everything, and going beyond her best to keep going. Fantastic twists and turns and a gulping-good read!

Why This Must Be Read: I have often called Redbyrd one of the queens of gen fic, particularly of the ep-related variety. This wonderful long story is a case in point, as we see the events of Maternal Instinct unfold through Teal'c's eyes. The excellent use of Bra'tac's reactions, thoughts on Jaffa culture, and Teal'c's perspective all put a new twist on a classic episode!

Why This Must Be Read: I love stories that explore pre-series Teal'c and his path to rebellion. Here, Rigel gives us a superb exchange between Bra'tac and Teal'c on the eve of battle, with Bra'tac planting the first hints of unease and critical thinking. The rhythm of their language, their mindset, the uncertainty -- it's all beautifully rendered, and well worth reading.

Why This Must Be Read: I love the format Tafkar uses here, as five different AUs cope with the same scenario off-world and we see them succeed or fail, depending on the makeup of SG-1. With just a few short paragraphs, Tafkar manages to sketch entire backstories of the different teams and how they came to work together. Some will amuse you, some will make you wince, but you'll enjoy every one!

(And if the Sha're one is my favorite, you'll all forgive me, right?)

Why This Must Be Read: This fic has one of my favorite friendships: Bra'tac and Daniel. I love how their relationship evolved over ten years, and this lovely vignette, which steals a moment of time in Threads, is a fascinating look at how very far both of them have come.

Daniel, unsettled and uncertain, retreats to the sanctuary of his office as he grapples with his return to the mortal plane and the momentous events that have occurred in his absence. Bra'tac discovers him there, and their brief exchange touches upon faith, and the purpose of history, and the nature of truth and belief.

Its very brevity gives this ficlet its power. Read this one thoughtfully, and savor.

Bra'tac examined him closely, then placed his hand on Daniel's chest and Daniel imagined he could feel his heart thudding against his ribcage beneath the man's palm. "Believe in this. And believe in those who would stand by your side."

Why This Must Be Read: This engaging story was inspired by discussion at redial_the_gate over the decision to leave Drey'auc and Ry'ac behind in Bloodlines, when Hammond had specifically instructed SG-1 to bring them back to Earth. ...Okay, it was mostly  inspired by my complaint that Ry'ac was more of a plot device than a character. Do you think I'm complaining that I got Redbyrd fic out of it? :)

The story is initially about Ry'ac and his childish understanding of events, and it's a joy to read about Drey'auc's fiery determination and Ry'ac's perception of the Jaffa and the Tau'ri. But as I commented when Redbyrd first wrote this, Bra'tac shamelessly steals the limelight the moment he appears in the fic, as we get a delightful peek at the methods of the man who carefully, skillfully trained Teal'c - not just as a warrior, but as the leader of the rebellion.

First Lessons is nice backstory in a missing scene, written with Redbyrd's usual attention to detail and canon. And it's got great Bra'tac, being awesome as usual. What more could you want?

Why This Must Be Read: This quiet, thoughtful ficlet offers us a glimpse of forward motion, as Sam chats quietly with Bra'tac about the current state of the Jaffa nation, the slow and marvelous nature of change, and the occasional necessity of baby steps. With Teal'c's toddler grandchild to serve as tangible metaphor to their discussion, and the joyful acceptance of infinite possibilities, Journey of a Thousand Years is a lovely snapshot of the future that we all hope is in store for our favorite characters.

"After all I have seen," Bra'tac says finally, and Sam can hear the pride in his voice, "I believe anything to be possible."
