Why This Must Be Read: This AU of Grace has been on my to-rec list for a while, and with a certain tidbit of science news being reported, I really couldn't resist. :)

Ultranos always write a superb Sam, and here she is at her best: courage and determination in the face of losing everything, and going beyond her best to keep going. Fantastic twists and turns and a gulping-good read!

Why This Must Be Read: The hardest part about the apocalypse isn't losing Earth. The hardest part is holding everything together afterwards.

Here is solid, aching Cam perspective as the Earth is lost and the survivors scrabble to find new footing on a cut-off Atlantis. Characterization all-round is moving, powerful, and poignant. This is a long, gripping story that ends, despite everything, with Cam's eternal optimism offering hope.

Why This Must Be Read: Out of necessity, this is a mystery crossover. What makes it so gripping is the characterization: Jack as the competent, intelligent general of the SGC, his rapport and trust in his people (especially Sam), the reactions of the various characters, and the realistic fusion of SG-1 with a certain movie series that you needn't have actually watched (I haven't, personally) in order to recognize. Great apocafic, and a really good read.

Why This Must Be Read: Jonas on Langara. Under the Ori.

This story will dig at you, until you are aching together with Jonas and shivering in the cold. Hope and despair, driven determination, utilizing the knowledge he gained through SG-1 as well as the bitter remnants of Nirrti's manipulations -- this is Jonas Quinn, very bloody but definitely unbowed, struggling for freedom for his people.

Long. Intense. Good.

Word spreads of a man who blazes in his disbelief, and has not been struck down.

Why This Must Be Read: Jack and Daniel, waiting... to find out if someone else successfully saved Earth.

This is beautiful, thoughtful, intense. It shows Jack's intelligence and Daniel's recognition of it, wordless communication and depth of understanding, all against the background of a maybe-possibly apocalypse that they can't do anything about.

This is so them, written with deft prose and aching characterization. Read this one and savor.

Why This Must Be Read: This is fabulously Jack, pared down to absolute essentials as he escapes Earth in the wake of Ori domination and Goa'uld occupation. Always moving, always searching, wary and skilled... and thinking that maybe, on the next planet, he can find a reason to hope.

I'm not a real apocafic fan, but a story that gives us the characters we love persevering in the face of disaster, bloody yet unbowed? I'll definitely get behind that.

Ingara follows PMW-957, and Walloon follows Ingara. It's like fishing, Jack decides as he hunches over a damp and fizzling fire a couple of klicks up the valley from the Stargate on Walloon. You can't really tell whether the fish is there, you can only cast the line out there and hope to get a strike. A good fisherman can tell where fish are likely to be, but you can't know for sure.

Why This Must Be Read: To quote the summary for this thoughtful fic: angst, apocafic, hope, zombies, donuts.

Teal'c, lone survivor on Earth, slowly, contemplatively makes his way to Area 51 for what he prays will be his ticket off-planet. You will be moved by his thoughts on the Tau'ri, the little metal box of keepsakes he carries, and the final momento he takes from Earth, to serve as its legacy in the stars.

Despite being apocafic, this is almost gentle, and perfectly Teal'c... and you'll finish reading it with a smile.

Why This Must Be Read: This powerful, gripping drama takes a sharp bend mid-season 1, as the Earth abruptly dies, taking half of SG-1 with it. Daniel and Teal'c, the shattered survivors, have to try and pick up the pieces. Teal'c wants revenge; Daniel wants survival, for himself, for Sha're, and for his adopted people on Abydos. But with no resources, no supplies, and no leads except a handful of addresses that Daniel remembers from debriefings about future missions, what chance do they have?

Disaster on Chulak makes things worse. Daniel is at the end of his rope when he gates to the last address he remembers from the debriefings: P3R-233. And suddenly, Daniel is facing the apocalypse. Again...

While I've read only this one, other readers will appreciate that Till Human Voices Wake Us is actually an experiment in triplicate, with two ship versions. The storyline alters in each, to reflect the differences in reactions and motivations of the three Daniels (or two Daniel and one Dani). So really, this is a three-for-one rec. Hope you all have time to spare, because once you start reading this amazing story, you're not going to stop until you've finished it!

Why This Must Be Read: The Earth may or may not be there any more, but SG-1 is still alive and kicking... even if they have to stay in hiding, and keep moving to avoid detection.

Cofax plunges us right into the middle of the story, giving us a rich, vivid look at the planet where Sam, Jack, Teal'c, and Daniel currently reside. There's great characterization as each team member does his or her best to deal with what they've got and what they need to keep going. And when events suddenly shift into crisis mode – well, this is SG-1. Even in grief and desperation, these four are marvelously themselves.

Like most apocafics, this story can't be classified as happy. But it's an excellent drama, intensely gripping, and a fantastic tribute to the tenacity of SG-1.

Please Hang Up and Try Again

Why This Must Be Read: This beautifully rendered story will unquestionably break your heart.

Abyssis gives us two times five telephone conversations Daniel never had: five because they never existed - each takes place in a different AU - and five that were left on his voice mail during the year that he was Ascended, but were subsequently erased before he ever heard them.

The erased voice mails are poignant and heartbreaking and wistful in turns, left by Sam, Jack, Jonas, and Janet, echoing events of Season Six until Sam finally erases them. And the AUs cover the gamut from hope to anguish and back again - the embittered, exhausted Daniel from Moebius, a Daniel on the run from Kinsey, a Daniel who finally achieves public recognition, a Daniel who loses his SG-1... and a Daniel who gets back Sha’re, which brings tears to my eyes every time.

You will be blown away by the sheer power of this fic and its scope of if-onlys and might-have-beens. Go and read this one right now.

Why This Must Be Read: I’ve listed an unusual number of categories here, because Fives is actually three different “Five Things” – all gen, and all wonderful!

The first set explains how Siler and Walter accidently save the world – whether it’s absentmindedly turning off the lights or giving aliens an unexpectedly helpful sugar rush. The second is a fascinating outsider’s look at the SGC, as Teyla observes different characters on Earth (I was most moved by her impressions of Daniel, although Teal’c came in a close second and Sam and Felger made me grin). The third is a fascinating, eerie exploration of AUs – events that occurred on the show that Sam wishes she could have changed… and the creepy reality of what might have happened if she’d acted differently.

Like all “Five Things” ficlets, Fives is a quick read; but you’ll find yourself remembering them for a long time to come.

Why This Must Be Read: I'm not much of a fan of the last two seasons of SG-1; to date, I've only made a single post-S8 rec, and that one heavily featured Jack. But just to show that I can be fair about things, here are two fic snippets for the price of one, both featuring the Ori storyline and both wonderful snapshots of characterization and friendship.

The first is apocafic, featuring Landry – who I would actually like, onscreen, if he even vaguely resembled the guy in this snippet – and Walter. (Who doesn't love Walter?) It's bleak and beautiful and heart-wrenching, and it's a silent tribute to the characters we love.

And then there's the second, which picks up on a single throwaway line in S10 – "Langara fell" – and runs with it. Even non-S6 fans like me were frustrated and felt that Jonas deserved better than just a passing, unemotional remark from Sam. This snippet rectifies that in a beautifully satisfying and teamy moment.

If you like the newer seasons of SG-1, you'll love this. And if you don't care for it much, like me, try these snippets anyway. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
