Why This Must Be Read: I'm not sure I even know a female version of John Watson existed (hey, medical doctor, name of show... it's a pretty safe assumption), but no knowledge of Elementary is required to enjoy this epistolary exchange between Janet, Joan, Cassie and George. There are multiple time jumps to cover nearly a decade of canon, but it's a delightful exploration of the friendships that surely exist outside the SGC.

I assume that if you are familiar with Joan Watson, you'll enjoy this ever more than I did... but either way, it's definitely a keeper!

I would be delighted to be Cassie’s weird but absurdly trustworthy Aunt Joan, keeper of secrets, buyer of lunches, sender of mildly inappropriate Christmas gifts, purveyor of worldly wisdom, et cetera. I hereby swear that I am neither a Bond villain nor a Bond girl, and that the worst thing your bosses are likely to find in my personal history is the business with the cadaver, the trombone, and the three watermelons, which I assume is already in their files from your background check.

Sorry, broken link. Fixed now!

Why This Must Be Read: This is George in delicous General Hammond rocks! mode, dealing with each original member of SG-1 in turn - with grace, with wry humor, with just enough selective blindness, and with every ounce of class that makes him the best general the SGC ever had.

Dr. Jackson fell into step, and George started spinning the tale. The least he could do was look after his people--and sometimes that meant nothing more than this.

Why This Must Be Read: OW OW OW OW OW

...Yeah, that and wow sums up my feelings while I read this new and fresh contribution to the Shades of Grey totality of fic.

So many of us tend to focus on the splintering of friendships and the team in the wake of the lies and breach of trust in this episode. But what happens when you focus on the impact these events would have had on the SGC itself?

I don't necessarily agree with every characterization in this (I like Travell), but it is bleakly, realistically, superbly done.

Why This Must Be Read: Walter perspective is such a rare treat! Here is Walter the Chevron Guy, watching the Quantum Mirror rather than the Stargate, and... waiting. His thoughts on various team members, and how Hammond interacts with all them, is fantastic.

This is sad and somber and somehow lonely, but that element of stubborn hope leaves you believing that there just might be a happy ending after all.

Why This Must Be Read: The summary of this is "five times Daniel sat alone in a dark room," but in reality, it's "five times Daniel tried to sit alone in a dark room, until someone rescued him." And it's truly lovely, as five different depressing, dark moments that Daniel canonically suffered are mitigated and consoled by various friends. I love how the choice of each person so fits the situation. A very warming read.

Why This Must Be Read: When a post-Abyss Jack wakes up in the infirmary with no memory of what put him there, he has to deal with unsettling claims of his past actions, the NID breathing down his neck, the Asgard's demands for his presence, a guilt-ridden Sam, a mysteriously absent Teal'c, and an infuriatingly enigmatic Ascended!Daniel. With the grudging help of an abrasive McKay, can he figure out what's really going on?

This is a long, absorbing mystery, told tightly within a very confused Jack's POV, that will keep you guessing throughout all its twisty turns.

Why This Must Be Read: This shiny new fic is exactly what it says: five times Walter, from Season 8 and onwards, wishes George Hammond was still running the SGC - a bit of wry humor, a generous dose of angst, and Walter as the observer of events. Definitely well worth reading!

Sometime in the middle of SG-1's third mission as a trio, he poked his head into O'Neill's office. "Colonel Carter just called in their check-in, right on time. She said all's clear."

O'Neill blinked at him a moment before biting out a gruff "Thanks," but as Walter eased the door shut he didn't miss the soft sigh of relief. Back at his station, he added a note to the desk log: New task: email O'Neill when SG-1 checks in

This is a fabulous, spooky story that speaks of strength of character, leadership, alienness, and personal courage. There is so much here: Sam and Daniel in an unusual Wonder Twins mode, Teal'c with his experience and weight of history, Hammond's determination to protect his people despite themselves, and competence from just about everyone, which is something I always love!

This will grip you and absorb you, and leave a lingering knowledge that the SGC will never really understand everything that they encounter through the Stargate.

Why This Must Be Read: Because George Hammond is awesome and took the most insane SG-1 shenanigans in stride with unflappable aplomb. And despite the light, humorous tone of this five things, the last one is the most solemn -- and the best one of all.

It seemed that every other mission SG-1 went on resulted in new chapters being added to the “Thou Shall Not On Missions” book. His favorite, although it meant fudging every single mission report, was the one that necessitated the chapter on “Thou shall not insult a planet’s sacred jackeloupe or unicorn as silly, imaginary, and/or stupid.” It was worth it, though, when he had locked himself in his office to laugh at Col. O’Neill’s hair and body being dyed purple for a week.
