It's the satisfaction of seeing Daniel still delighting in the unknown after everything he's experienced. It's the marvel of offworld things that can't quite be explained, and the joy of the unknown, and Sam the skeptical scientist still embracing it. It's friendship, and character study, and a hint of Daniel/Sha're. And it just deserves to be read!

Why This Must Be Read: Once upon a time, I recced Beatrice Otter's painfully powerful The Weight of Non-Existent Years. Here is the remix of that story, told from Sam's POV: much less angst, with the same stellar characterization, and a tribute to a beautiful friendship.

How do I bear this reminder of the symbiote, of Jolinar, of naquadah, of the enemy inside me? With feet planted and shoulders squared. How do I better accept insults from so-called superiors without the temptation to lose my composure every time? With irony added to the hard eyes, and no actual deference, although my chin is up. How do I deal with the utter absurdity of an alien race? With a raised eyebrow and deadpan delivery, perspective and the sucker-punch remark. How do I face the death of friends? With mourning, and respect, and persistence in the face of absence. Indeed. In deed.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fantastic look at two missing scenes from Changeling from Sam's perspective, first when the team discovers Teal'c and Bra'tac and then a conversation in the infirmary afterward. I love the implications of Jolinar's legacy for their friendship, the sensations lost and the new hopes found, and the warm connection between Sam and Teal'c. This is thoughtful, warming, and moving, all at once.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a fic of joy -- Sam's friendship and closeness with each member of her team in turn, plus Jacob. Vala and Jack are the only ones missing here (and from the summary, Jack's omission seems deliberate, although a casual reference to that friendship is also included.) Why This Must Be Read: I love early-season Teal'c perspective, and this marvelous fic has that in spades: observing the "rites of mourning" in the wake of Kawalsky's death, his adaptation of Daniel's explanations to seek his own insight into the Tau'ri, his bemusement at Sam's eagerness to learn. This is Teal'c, at the very beginning -- superbly, wonderfully himself.

There are so many things to ask, every question leading to a dozen more, and he has been allowing himself to indulge his curiosity as he has not done since he was a child. It is all too easy among these people, who are constantly asking why and why must it be and why should we not as if they were not dangerous questions.

Why This Must Be Read: Komos writes some of the most enchanting Teal'c fic. With this five-things-turned-six, she gives us a beautiful portrait of post-Unending Teal'c, in all his dignity, maturity, and grace. There is his sense of self, and his acceptance of the weight he carries; there are his keepsakes of his teammates, and the love he has for every one of them. And most moving of all, there are the gifts he brings to each of his friends in turn: their acceptance, their reactions, and their affection. The last section, with Sam and Teal'c, nearly brings me to tears every time.

I rec this despite my intense dislike for Unending, and I strongly urge like-minded fans to read this and enjoy. And if you did like Unending.... well, what are you waiting for? :)

He has brought back one unbroken shell from the years crushed to dust along the shores of never-was.
