Why This Must Be Read: From the first reference to Dr. Daniel Jackson (1964-2002, 2004-2060) you will start grinning at the sheer hilarity of this fantastic send up of the many, many mistakes that inevitably creep into any attempt to understand history without the proper references. It's great fun to see how a 22nd century historian misinterprets so much of what we understand ourselves, even if the humor is bittersweet sometimes!

Why This Must Be Read: Exactly what it says on the tin: five delightful happy endings for the team, for Cassie, for Jonas. From the silliness of the "Fairway to Heaven" to the triumph of Langara's resistance of the Ori to the sweetness of Cassie joining the SGC, every one of these is guaranteed to make you smile!

The first annual invitational interplanetary golf tournament tees off from the base of the ramp at Stargate Command and snowballs from there, quickly becoming known to its participants as “Fairway to Heaven” and expanding in its second year to include the Pegasus galaxy. The annual Intergalactic Invitational becomes something of a bureaucratic nightmare for the Pentagon and the IOA (although the SGC doesn’t mind the extra work), but as it happens, the tournament continually provides such a boost to Earth’s off-world public relations that they can’t shut it down. Besides, competitive sports turn out to be remarkably effective in uniting the fractious Jaffa and in promoting friendship between suspicious neighbours across the ‘Gate network.

Why This Must Be Read: To quote the original prompt: There must have been a closed time loop when SG-1 ended up stranded in the future, before Cassie and/or Sam somehow got word back to the past to have Cassie waiting at the right moment. What was life like for Cassie in the loop where SG-1 never came back from 1969?

Yvi did a fabulous job of creating an entire alternate reality in which SG-1 never came back. Her world's history is rich, detailed, and realistic: the Jaffa are more wary of the Tau'ri without Teal'c, the Asgard have less to do with them without Jack, and there is little information on the Ancients without Daniel. On the other hand, there are the fascinating twists of this other reality, including Furlings, the program gone public, victory over the Goa'uld, and a certain civilian becoming head of the SGC.

Cassie gets a long, satisfying life, including marriage and a family... and then she knows she's going to live another one, all over again.

Full disclaimer: the prompt that inspired this story was mine. Yvi did a great job with it, didn't she? :)

Why This Must Be Read: In the aftermath of Janet's death, Cassie isn't exactly willing to tamely follow the bright and shining path that others have mapped out of her. Stubborn and angry, she goes her own way... until that way proves nearly disastrous. It takes Sam's unquestioning love and support, a quiet and honest conversation with Jack (with Thor for company), and the memory of an exchange with Teal'c to lead Cassie to a new decision and a new vocation. Her final, unexpected choice is a moving tribute to her past, a promise for a better future, and absolutely right.

I knew, of course, that I could have gone anywhere and done anything. People were constantly telling me that the world was my oyster, although I never really understood what that meant. Daniel tried explaining it to me once, but I got lost in the anthropological meaning of the phrase's origin. Teal'c set me straight, sort of. "It means the world is yours to explore, Cassandra Fraiser." And, while I got that, I still didn't understand the connection to slimy and disgusting shellfish. Perhaps there are some things one non-Earthling should never try to explain to another.

Why This Must Be Read: Paian writes the most wonderful Five Things - I've recced many of them before. This pair of Five Things features Jonas Quinn and George Hammond: five times Jonas wanted to go home, and five things George did when he retired.

I very much like that Paian chose to archive these two together, for the sheer poignancy of the sharp contrast of what Jonas and Hammond face. Once Jonas walked away from Kelowna in Meridian, he never really had a home again; and in the bright and gentle future that Paian lovingly paints for George, he enjoys home in every sense of the word, in both his family and his choices.

Paian offers wincing angst with the first set and then alleviates it with sweet hope in the second. In both cases, you'll find yourself enjoying every word.

This is futurefic at its best and brightest. Read it and smile.

This is what they wanted the SGC to be, all those years when the SGC had to be a front-line defense installation. This isn't a Delta site or a Gamma site, this is the SGC all over again, their own SGC, set up from the start the way they would have done it if they knew then what they know now.

Why This Must Be Read:
The wonderful Tallulah Rasa calls this "unfinished business," in that it's technically the start of a larger story she never expects to finish. But this reads beautifully as a coda of its own: the quiet ending of SG-1, and the not-so-quiet unwillingness to just drift into the future.

Lovely Daniel POV (as always), warm touches of team and humor, the delightful shorthand that will always and forever exist between Jack and Daniel... and the promise of a new beginning, all over again. Read this one and smile.

And as Ry'ac rejoins the Jaffa after spending a decade on Earth - at his father's side in his declining years, when he'd outlived his Tau'ri friends - there is also the pride in his people when he looks upon them with fresh eyes: their endurance, their triumph, and their future.

Thoughtful, eloquent, and elegant, this lovely ficlet is a tribute to what we all want the Jaffa to become, as a legacy to the people we love who labored to make it happen.

Jaffa built from stone.

He'd spent so long amidst the modern steel and glass and concrete of the Tau'ri that he had nearly forgotten.

Why This Must Be Read: Annerb treats us to a delightful, thoughtful character study of two of the strongest women in the SGC universe: Samantha Carter and Sha're of Abydos.

The AU setting, with a Sha're that survived FIAD, takes place some time in the future, in which the SGC program has gone public and SG-1 is too famous for their own comfort. Against the magnificent backdrop of a moutain cabin (sadly, not Jack's - they're too well known for that), Sha're and Sam hike to Alma's Peak and consider the paths they've taken... and how to meet the challenges of their future and the losses it might hold.

I have a not-so-secret adoration for good quality authors who recognize that Sha're is a product of a different culture, and uses those differences to celebrate her personality instead of attempting to reshape her to fit Western values. Annerb does a magnificent job of showing us, through Sam's modern POV, Sha're's strength of will, her understanding of the universe, and the cool reflection of a woman who has gone through fire, survived - and triumphed.

The View From Up Here is lovely story, with impeccable characterization for both Sam and Sha're and a lovely touch of teamy goodness on the side. Read this one and savor.

Why This Must Be Read:
At first glimpse, this short story seems to open with an almost prosaic scene: Teal’c and SG-1 coming through the Gate, with Daniel there to welcome them. Then, slowly, it dawns on you: who Daniel is, now, at the SGC. What Teal’c is doing. The years of friendship that allows for a shorthand of even brief sentences to carry a wealth of meaning.

There’s gentle humor and the enchanting prospect of a beautiful future. There’s the inherent promise of a marvelous backstory, and the satisfaction of seeing these characters we love at peace. Sam and Jack aren’t physically present for this one, but they’re solidly part of Teal’c and Daniel’s lives – and it’s a life that I still hope Niamea will continue to create for us, because this is one happy ending I would love to see for SG-1!

They know that within the next few years, the SGC will be going public and their lives will turn upside-down all over again; but what will they do until then?

Daniel’s enchanting solution is utterly, delightfully in character, as he proposes that he, Sam, and Teal’c take the time to really explore the one planet that they haven’t had the chance to truly experience. There’s warmth, and caring, and friendship, and a truly elegant tagline that promises a happy ending for the characters we love. What more could you want?

Why This Must Be Read: This fun, short ficlet was written for the Keep the Gate Open challenge from [info]sg1_ever_after. It gets to the “happy ending” part through a slightly manic detour, but that more or less defines SG-1, doesn’t it?

After rejecting Daniel’s plan – which starts with having someone kill him – they quickly cycle through Plans B, C, and D, none of which involve allowing Vala to fly one of the F-302s…
