Why This Must Be Read: OW OW OW OW OW

...Yeah, that and wow sums up my feelings while I read this new and fresh contribution to the Shades of Grey totality of fic.

So many of us tend to focus on the splintering of friendships and the team in the wake of the lies and breach of trust in this episode. But what happens when you focus on the impact these events would have had on the SGC itself?

I don't necessarily agree with every characterization in this (I like Travell), but it is bleakly, realistically, superbly done.

...No, that Thor.

A gleeful little crossover, sparkling with classic Tallulah Rasa dialogue and snark and friendship. Smile-inducing!

Why This Must Be Read: Over the years, Thor contemplates the complexities and contradictions of the Tau'ri. More specifically, of women. Even more specifically, of Sam Carter.

This is a thoughtful, bittersweet character story, and a most intriguing read.

As it was with all of Tau’ri culture, it was through Jack O’Neill that he was first introduced to the world of Tau’ri women. And as was with nearly all things Jack O’Neill, it was Daniel Jackson who set the poor alien straight, introducing him to Samantha Carter for the first time.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a giggle-worthy romp of poor Thor trying to understand the very baffling human race, and the even more baffling Jack O'Neill! Absolutely guaranteed to leave you grinning. :)

Why This Must Be Read: When the Marine Corps grows suspicious of the alarming number of deaths ascribed to "deep space telemetry" in Cheyenne Mountain, JAG is sent in. Teal'c, Thor, and a strangely-familiar Tok'ra -- not to mention SG-1 in all its idiosyncratic glory -- was not what they were expecting!

Even if (like me) you've never seen a single episode of JAG, trust me -- witty snark and banter, wonderful outside perspective of the SGC, and sparkling characterization will leave you with a huge smile on your face.

Why This Must Be Read: This is rich, and aching, and hints at a vast expanse of lost history and background that we -- and SG-1 -- can never, ever know.

SG-1 among the Asgard, in all their alien and incomprehensible glory. Read this slowly, and savor.

Why This Must Be Read: This lovely, thoughtful fic repairs one of the most egregious flaws of Unending: the inexplicable suicide of the Asgard. It also gives us Thor and Loki, some marvelous Asgard POV on what it really means to be the Fifth Race, and a fascinating exploration of Asgard motivation and hopes. Read this one and savor!

Why This Must Be Read: This lovely fic is set in early S9, just before Sam goes to Area 51. Sam is feeling adrift and lost; her team is scattering to different planets (and galaxies), and she feels that all she has to show for it are a few boxes and some painful memories.

Then Teal'c shows up, and their conversation is unexpectedly interrupted...

As Canon Sees It is a satisfying tribute to years of tears and triumph, the friendship between Sam and Teal'c, and knowing that things do matter. (It also shows that it always pays to have a camera in your pocket.) Thor, in all his non-cuddly huggability, is only the icing on the cake. :)

Why This Must Be Read: Full and utterly gleeful disclaimer: this is a brand new Tallulah Rasa fic, and she wrote it for me for the [livejournal.com profile] sg1teamficathon! Expect shameless squeeing ahead. :)

By Ear is something I thought was no longer possible: a fresh take on an episode tag for Shades of Grey. Jack rejects all of Hammond’s suggestions for team-building or MacKenzie sessions, and takes his team on a supposedly quiet, peaceful mission instead. Naturally, within seconds of going through the Gate, the team finds themselves separated from one another.

What follows is a fascinating exercise in aural bonding, as the team coordinates through their radios and Jack makes the uncomfortable discovery that his kids have managed to become a seamless unit in his absence. There’s delightful snark and lovely characterization, and twist upon twist, and teamy goodness, and Jack finding his place once again - and all of it in Tallulah Rasa’s marvelous style. Go and read this one. You’ll be glad that you did!

The Tell-Tale Pants

Why This Must Be Read: Told with a delightfully in-character Jack POV, The Tell-Tale Pants gives us the team in crisis, with Jack hosting a Goa'uld and the self-destruct on their ship counting down to zero. How is SG-1 going to get themselves out of this mess?

There are leather pants and zats and Thor and snarking and a team that knows its leader wonderfully well for a final humorous twist. This fic is fun teamy goodness at its very best!

Why This Must Be Read: My usual humor preferences involve fics where the characters behave perfectly normally (well, as normal as SG-1 ever is) but are faced with bizarre circumstances. This fic is very, very different, with various fan favorites acting completely OOC…

And yet I love it anyway.

That’s probably because of Hammond, who is delightfully in character throughout. On the day after Halloween, he faces down the most incredible group of shame-faced people, including SG-1, Bra’tac, Jacob Carter, Thor, and an Ascended Daniel, scolding them for their inappropriate behavior. (The role Jack plays with Thor is scarily appropriate.) Then you get to the final line, and discover the little twist that shows that George Hammond is always, always solidly in control.

It’s short and silly and fluffy and it will make you giggle. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

Why This Must Be Read: Two delightful snippets for the price of one! These were written for the [info]loose_ends_fic ficathon, and they explain exactly why Sam never got to have an Asgard ship named after her.

The first one is moving, and poignant, and has an astonishing Thor POV, who evidently ascribes to the belief in the power of names and the impact they can have on the things so named. It's a lovely tribute to the team we love to see how the mannerisms he ascribes to each member of SG-1 come to life from his particular perspective.

…And then we get the second snippet, which is pure fluffy teamy goodness and hilariously funny, as poor Daniel is put on the spot and forced to blurt out the awful truth. Not to worry, though, because Teal'c gets the last word – and for me, that is always the mark of an excellent fic. :)
