Why This Must Be Read: This fic extrapolates beautifully from what we know of Vala's backstory, giving us her recovery from Qetesh's removal... under the supervision of Anise. Cool pragmatic scientist meets flamboyant con woman, and the results are simply fantastic! Add an explanation for Anise's choice of clothing, some perspective on the Tok'ra's reactions to the events of Stargate: the Movie, and stellar characterization for both women, and you'll find this story an absorbing, fascinating read.

She's going to kill Lantash for this. Her work is far too important to be interrupted by humanitarian aid simply because Lantash feels guilty that he had to torture this woman. And now Freya is locked inside her own mind, not even offering suggestions on how to deal with the woman, reliving her own treatment at Ra's hands all those many years ago.

Why This Must Be Read: This hilarious sendup of Ascension began as commentfic from Thothmes and was expanded into a full-blown, delicious-beyond-words story by Beth. Take typical cat traits and add Ascended Daniel to the mix, and you get... well, this! Laugh-out-loud antics that are still perfectly in character, from visits to Jack in Washington to harassing Mitchell in his dress uniform. Add Sam as head of the SGC and Vala and Teal'c and Cassie for good measure, tie up a loose end from Ark of Truth, and you end up with a marvelously entertaining story that I just couldn't wait to rec.

Edit: And for Thothmes' hilarious Jack-and-Daniel (and Nyan!) epilogue, don't miss this!

Why This Must Be Read: This lovely, thoughtful fic repairs one of the most egregious flaws of Unending: the inexplicable suicide of the Asgard. It also gives us Thor and Loki, some marvelous Asgard POV on what it really means to be the Fifth Race, and a fascinating exploration of Asgard motivation and hopes. Read this one and savor!

Why This Must Be Read: In this thoughtful post-Ark of Truth story, Cameron is perceptive enough to recogize certain warning signals regarding Dr. Daniel Jackson and head him off at the pass. I love the deliberate calm of Cameron here, the gradual spreading of his spinning web to include the entire team, and his wry acknowledgment that of course Daniel would never leave things as they are. Excellently insightful, and well worth the read!

Why This Must Be Read: Travelling One not only gives us the events we saw onscreen in Continuum from Daniel's POV, but also the aftermath, when the timeline has been reset and residue still lingers. Plenty of TO's trademark teamy goodness and friendship, some nice filling-in of the blanks, and a sober consideration of not only what-might-have-beens, but what-actually-was -- it all adds up to an excellent read.

Why This Must Be Read: Teamy goodness, delicious snark, and Sam participating in an off-world motorcycle race with Ancient technology as the prize. The gang's all here, from Jack to Mitchell to Ba'al, as Sam and Vala hunt for their missing teammates and deal with blackmail, "Blue Barbie," and various death threats. Team glee and ladies for the win!

Siler cleared his throat. ‘What are we going to do, ma’am?’

Her blue eyes glittered with determination. ‘We’re going to find the rest of SG1, win the race despite…Blue Barbie, keep our prize and kill Ba’al.’ She thought for a moment. ‘Maybe not in that order.’

Why This Must Be Read: This almost gentle ficlet is an episode tag for The Lost Tribe from SGA, in which poor Daniel goes through an all-too-familiar scenario yet again. Jack and Daniel share a conversation that is both understated and rich with understanding and is utterly, perfectly them.

Only Jack could take the horror of the choicelessness of that moment and reduce it to a harmless conversational kernel--and do it with understanding instead of condescension or pity.

Why This Must Be Read: Teal'c and Daniel combine their respective skills to track down two missing Jaffa boys before their hot-tempered father can threaten the fragile peace of Dakara. Archeology, wilderness survival, the comfortable camaraderie of two old friends with a decade's experience of working together -- it all adds up to a solid, engaging mystery story that you're sure to enjoy!

“An official visit from an SG-team would be excessive and inflammatory, under the circumstances.”

Daniel Jackson paused. “Ah. Whereas a visit from an old friend …?”

Teal’c bowed. “Would be most welcome.”

Why This Must Be Read: Sam Carter may have taken command of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy, but three heartbeats still connect her to Earth.

This is a gentle, loving tribute to the closeness of SG-1 that will never go away, as Sam's first weeks of command are enlivened by messages from back home: from Daniel, from Jack, from Teal'c. Sweet, insightful, humorous, and utterly delightful, Where You Hang Your Hat is the shining best of both shows, and a story you'll remember for a long time to come.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic is a celebration of what makes Daniel Jackson so special. Because even after all he's endured, after the Goa'uld and the Replicators and the Ori and everything, Daniel can still joyously embrace the exploration and discoveries of new cultures and worlds. This is a Daniel who is unbeaten, unbowed, and triumphantly, delightfully himself.

Why This Must Be Read: Sid gives us the text of five enchanting e-mails that Jack sends Sam during her year in Atlantis. There's the close, affectionate camaraderie of a decade here, with humor and stellar characterization. This is pure, delightful Jack, being unquestionably himself in his letters to an old friend, and is absolutely guaranteed to make you smile.

Link: Five Joint Missions, Post Retrograde (LJ temporarily down; here's the link at her website)

Why This Must Be Read:
I don't follow SGA, so why do I adore Martha Wilson's Retrograde series so much? I have no idea, except that she's a marvelous writer with a wonderful gift for prose and dialogue and a fantastic grasp of characterization. Then again, I've followed her to fandoms I don't know, just for the chance to read her work... :)

Five Joint Missions, Post Retrograde puts us right in the middle of the Retrograde AU. (If you're unfamiliar with the storyline, it's enough to know that Atlantis was cut off from Earth for three years, and that thanks to the NID, the Atlantis expedition is still very wary of the people of Earth). As the title suggests, it's five missions, from the SGA characters' POV, that various team members of SG-1 undertake while they're on Atlantis. There's humor and pathos and lovely, deft scene-spinning, and you'll be reading this with a grin on your face... right before you hurriedly click on the link to read more of this excellent AU!

Link: Tribute to Don S. Davis: Hammond Alphabet Soup

Why This Must Be Read:
Hammond Alphabet Soup went live on August 4th, on what would have been Don S. Davis' 66th birthday. In tribute to the man who brought General George Hammond to vibrant, wonderful life, and in salute to the best general to ever grace the halls of the SGC, 27 authors wrote 28 different ficlets, inspired by the letters of the alphabet. Shorter ficlets are posted at the link in full, with links to the authors' LJs for comments; longer fics are excerpted, with links to the authors' LJs for the rest of the fic.

There's George's backstory: his time in Vietnam, his first meeting with his wife and his thoughts of her after her death. There's young Lieutenant Hammond in 1969, and General Hammond musing on sending SG-1 thirty years into the past. We get his thoughts on SG-1, from the earliest days of the team to the moment he leaves for Washington, and a glimpse at how they regard him. There are encounters with Janet, with Bra'tac, with Jacob, with Maybourne; there are team debriefings, red phones, Hammond's concern for his people, and the courage of an "ordinary" man and grandfather who juggles the most extraordinary on a daily basis. All unique. All delightful. All well worth reading.

Full disclaimer: I had the privilege of organizing this anthology and writing two of the ficlets. Clear skies, George.

Link: The Weight of Non-Existent Years

Why This Must Be Read: I have mentioned once or twice (or dozens of times, heh) that I really hated Unending. Yet I have found a few fics that I have loved about that episode, and invariably, they involve the friendship between Sam and Teal'c. Like this one, only ow.

The Weight of Non-Existent Years gives us Teal'c and Sam friendship in the aftermath, before Sam departs for her new posting. Related with elegant prose from Teal'c's POV, we see him struggling to reconcile the woman he knew for fifty years on the Odyssey - the woman who, he realizes, "knew him better than anyone in his whole life. Better than Bra’tac. Certainly better than Shaun’auc, Drey’auc, or Ishta" - with the younger, stronger, lighter woman who stands before him now.

You will ache for Teal'c, and wince for Sam, too, who has lost the marvelous rapport that she developed with her friend over five absent decades. This fic is a beautifully crafted elegy and tribute to the friendship that is, and the friendship that was.

Too good and too short to excerpt. Go and read!

Why This Must Be Read: This short, fun ficlet gives us Sam on the firing range right before she goes to Atlantis, and Jack finding her there to give her a rather... unique gift.

Jack shrugged his shoulders before saying, “If they laugh at you, shoot ‘em.”

Very much in character, with a beautifully poignant zinger of a final line, Promotion Presents is a quick read that you'll definitely enjoy.
