Why This Must Be Read: This is Sam and Vala fanfic at its best, as Vala kinda-sorta kidnaps Sam for some badly needed R&R in the wake of Line in the Sand. Characterization is perfect and feels wonderfully real. We can only hope that both Sam and Vala had some restorative moments like this!

She didn’t mean to overhear the conversation, but how could she not, when she was sitting next to Sam in the restaurant and her cell phone rang in the middle of death by chocolate. Vala knew of many ways to die but this was her favorite.

Why This Must Be Read: Sam and Vala barely exchanged a dozen words when they first met in Beachhead. How did they get from that cool beginning to close friendship?

Zip presents the reader with a delightful scenario that begins lightly, veers into a common pain, and ends with complete satisfaction. Deft, utterly in character, and a very entertaining read!

Why This Must Be Read: The women of Stargate have always had incredible potential for storytelling. TPTB have sadly fallen short of that potential, which is one of the reasons why we have fanfic! And in this amazing story, Isabelle brings Sam, Vala, and Sarah Gardener together – a meeting of the Ex-Hosts Club – for conversation, understanding, and possibly even some solace.

Vala discovers, from her illicit reading of the files, that the host of Osiris – who she had met when she still played host to Qetesh – is alive, and at least techically well, on Earth. Daniel flatly refuses to even consider the idea of allowing them to meet, but Sam sees things differently. She has her own, less wrenching (perhaps) experience as a former host, and understands the need that drives Vala to seek out Sarah and talk to her.

There are some painfully honest conversations, and some incredible Sam self-analysis, and a Vala who is actually someone I might grow to like, unlike the one I usually see on the screen. There's pain, and determination, and the desperation for survival… and, as Sam muses, the hope that there might be something beyond that, too, someday.

This is the story we never get on the show: picking up the pieces of a shattered life. And it's well worth reading.
