Why This Must Be Read: This fantastic, novel-length AU story gives us a 15-year-old Daniel Jackson, who grew up on Abydos (Mel and Claire opened the Stargate in '82, and stayed behind) and is now training at the SGC to help fight against the Goa'uld and get his brother and sister, Sha'uri and Skaara, back home. I have already recced the wonderful Translations, which covers this AU's version of Season One. Now, in Diplomacy, Night Spear treats us to fascinating twists and turns in canon, exploring the different ways events turn in Seasons 2-3 when a younger Daniel is present at the SGC, but not an active member of SG-1

The fic is technically WIP, since only 18 of 26 chapters are currently posted. But you'll want to start reading this right now - for the lovely characterization, the impeccable writing, the tight plotting, the twisting of storylines (Secrets and Thor's Chariot as one!), and the fixing of canon loopholes. There is less onscreen Teal'c and Daniel friendship than there was in Translations, but the amazing Jack and Daniel friendship will more than make up for it. My two current favorite scenes include Jack teaching teenaged Daniel how to handle a weapon, with the memory of Charlie looming; and the awesome rendition of The Fifth Race, which is somehow even better than the version on the show.

Make sure you've got plenty of time, though; it stands at over 160,000 words now, and once you get started, you won't be able to stop!

Why This Must Be Read: Sweet, charming, and michievious, this ficlet offers us a fascinating snippet of life on Abydos. As lovely as it is to glimpse some cultural backstory, though, it's even more delightful to have a Sha're that is so perfectly in character, treating her clueless husband as a very human being!

Too short to excerpt - this is a quick, fun read. Enjoy this one for the satisfaction of knowing that Daniel surely had wonderful days on Abydos like this... and then join me in wishing for more Sha're stories from Emily!

Why This Must Be Read: Rigel captures the beauty and richness of Abydos in this haunting fic, as Sha'uri contemplates her Danyel and wonders if she can keep him tethered to the sands of reality.

I love stories that give us Sha're's culture and background, and Rigel paints a lush, lovely picture of her beliefs, her fears, and her determination. There are hints and portents of the future, aching imagery, her acceptance of Daniel's nature and her careful efforts to guide those instincts towards life and contentedness. Metaphorical and literal threads of sky and sand and water, all woven together for a story of beautiful, thoughtful melancholy.

Read Rigel's fic slowly, and with the care it deserves - and just try not to shiver, at the end.

Why This Must Be Read: Annerb treats us to a delightful, thoughtful character study of two of the strongest women in the SGC universe: Samantha Carter and Sha're of Abydos.

The AU setting, with a Sha're that survived FIAD, takes place some time in the future, in which the SGC program has gone public and SG-1 is too famous for their own comfort. Against the magnificent backdrop of a moutain cabin (sadly, not Jack's - they're too well known for that), Sha're and Sam hike to Alma's Peak and consider the paths they've taken... and how to meet the challenges of their future and the losses it might hold.

I have a not-so-secret adoration for good quality authors who recognize that Sha're is a product of a different culture, and uses those differences to celebrate her personality instead of attempting to reshape her to fit Western values. Annerb does a magnificent job of showing us, through Sam's modern POV, Sha're's strength of will, her understanding of the universe, and the cool reflection of a woman who has gone through fire, survived - and triumphed.

The View From Up Here is lovely story, with impeccable characterization for both Sam and Sha're and a lovely touch of teamy goodness on the side. Read this one and savor.

Why This Must Be Read: So few authors even try to write Sha're, and even fewer manage to get her right. She is no timid, shrinking violet, but she is also most emphatically not a modern Western feminist! She is a product of her own culture and values and a fiercely independent spirit, and it takes talent to do this amazing woman justice.

Beatrice Otter breathes her to life in her Determination series with incredible power and delicacy, giving us a Sha're who is uniquely herself and utterly perfect.

In this AU, it was Daniel and Skaara who were abducted by Apophis, and it is Sha're who comes to Earth and goes to Chulak with the rest of SG-1 in an effort to get her people back. Beatrice treats us to a woman who watches, and waits, and learns; who navigates the foreign ways of Earth and the SGC with wisdom and caution, using patience and just a touch of guile. We see her careful meeting with General Hammond, her dealings with Sam and Walter and Siler, and her powerful confrontation with Teal'c, which pays tribute to the worldview of both and the strength of the woman who inspired the rebellion on Abydos.

Determination is a WIP of sorts, in that each ficlet stands on its own, yet is part of a greater whole that offers great promise for more. Go read these, and urge Beatrice to continue this marvelous AU!

Full disclaimer: Beatrice started this fascinating AU at my own prompt. I am awed with what she's done and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Why This Must Be Read:
This haunting, elegant fic, set within the final scenes of the movie, touches upon Daniel and Sha'uri determining their future, but is mostly about Sha'uri and Jack.

Abyssis' intelligent, intuitive version of Sha'uri is wise enough to sense the darkness that lingers around her new husband's friend, and she worries that he needs something to act as his anchor. There is lovely backstory, and dreamy culture-building, and the pain of a quiet full circle, as the gift that was given to assauge one death is returned to help share in the grief of another.

This story will break your heart. And then you'll want to read it all over again.

Why This Must Be Read: It may seem strange to rec a story in the Sha're category when the fic takes place after her death. But this lovely, moving piece is very much about Sha're, and the inheritance she left for her people.

I adore stories that offer an insight into Abydon culture, and Emily offers a beautiful look at the mourning rituals that take place in the wake of Forever In a Day. Daniel struggles to conform to the formalities, but his memories of his wife, and his regrets and distress, make it difficult... Until Kasuf leaves him a tangible reminder of the legacy Sha're left behind, and the part Daniel played in offering it to her in the first place.

Achingly bittersweet and powerful in its simplicity, this story is a tribute - to Sha're, to Daniel, and to the people of Abydos.

Why This Must Be Read: Telepathicpixie packs incredible power and strength and characterization into just 250 words. And even as Amaunet thinks she is crushed, and even as Sha're is forced to acknowledge that she cannot stop the demon that has take up residence in her body...

Well, Amaunet doesn't know the meaning of strong.

Sha're does.

Why This Must Be Read: Two great Sha're ficlets for the price of one rec! Abyssis wrote both of these by request (the second one was actually my request, heh) and posted them together, so I'm reccing both of them at once.

For I Have Seen the Storm is technically a prequel to one of the AUs in the previously-recced Please Hang Up And Try Again, but it reads well enough on its own. Sha're wakes up for the first time in years with no one in her head but herself. The Tok'ra have rescued her, and the first person she sees is Jacob Carter. Their ensuing conversation is perfectly Jacob, with his awkward and gruff reassurance, and perfectly Sha're: her joy at her freedom, and her fierce determination to do what she can in the battle against the Goa'uld. It's 900 words of grace and courage and triumph.

The Promises We Keep is set within the bleaker reality of canon, in a stolen moment of time in Secrets. With Daniel momentarily out of earshot, Sha're confronts Teal'c: about his role in her abduction, the faith that Daniel puts in him, the role he plays in the battle against the Goa'uld... and she extracts a promise: Look after my Danyel, a vow that leads all too clearly to the events of Forever In a Day. That's a lot to pack into 450 words, but Abyssis does it effortlessly!

Two insightful, beautifully crafted ficlets about this wonderful woman. You'll cheer with the first and wince with the second and love them both!

Why This Must Be Read: This excellent short story gives us an intense confrontation between two very determined women: Sha're and Vala.

Vala is startled when a strangely-familiar woman marches into her holding cell and demands that she release Daniel from the bracelet she slapped on his wrist in Avalon. There's attack and counter-attack, with Sha're standing her ground and Vala calling her on Amaunet. And in the end, Vala is forced to concede that she can't win this particular battle.

Stellar characterization and superb voices: Best Laid Plans is a great read that will have you cheering for Sha're - and pleased that Vala will probably get her consolation prize in the form of Cameron Mitchell. :)

Please Hang Up and Try Again

Why This Must Be Read: This beautifully rendered story will unquestionably break your heart.

Abyssis gives us two times five telephone conversations Daniel never had: five because they never existed - each takes place in a different AU - and five that were left on his voice mail during the year that he was Ascended, but were subsequently erased before he ever heard them.

The erased voice mails are poignant and heartbreaking and wistful in turns, left by Sam, Jack, Jonas, and Janet, echoing events of Season Six until Sam finally erases them. And the AUs cover the gamut from hope to anguish and back again - the embittered, exhausted Daniel from Moebius, a Daniel on the run from Kinsey, a Daniel who finally achieves public recognition, a Daniel who loses his SG-1... and a Daniel who gets back Sha’re, which brings tears to my eyes every time.

You will be blown away by the sheer power of this fic and its scope of if-onlys and might-have-beens. Go and read this one right now.

Why This Must Be Read: I have been waiting for a long time for the opportunity to rec this delightful Abydos story! Set some time between the movie and COTG, this charming fic gives us beautiful snapshots into life on Abydos – the freedom from Ra’s tyranny that impoverished them for so long, the eagerness of the Abydon people to have Daniel teach them of their lost heritage, the humor of Daniel’s not-so-successful attempts to follow the culture’s traditions. It’s written with deftness and warmth and love, and it will make you fall in love with Abydos – and Daniel! – all over again.

Why This Must Be Read: This lovely ficlet includes the Sha’re that lives inside my head – practical and mischievous and content, confident in her marriage and her place in Daniel’s life. She’s sassy and funny, and she treats Daniel like a human being, not the savior of Abydos.

That’s an awful lot to pack into less than 350 words, but Tripoli manages it with style. This is a beautiful, wistful glimpse into Daniel and Sha’re’s life on Abydos; because, as Tripoli writes, “When it's four years later and you've got her dead body on the ground in front of you, you better have something that made it all worthwhile.”

In this five things, Emily highlights the inevitable struggles that Daniel undergoes in his acclimation to life on Abydos, and how Sha’re quietly smooths his path without him even realizing it. These range from the caring wife to the careful cook, from the narrow-eyed sister to the slightly exasperated diplomat. But most beautifully of all, there’s the Sha’re that lives in my brain, and that I wish Daniel could have loved for a little longer: Sha're can make him live outside of his own head like no one he ever met before. Later, it will be the thing he misses most about her.

Why This Must Be Read: In Quiet Strength, Moonshayde does a fantastic job of letting us take a peek inside Sha’re’s head during the events of COTG. A clever twist explains the Sha’uri/Sha’re contradiction in names, as Sha’re leaves the “quiet strength” of her marriage behind in order to once again become Sha’uri, the fiery heroine who defied Ra. We see her memories of Daniel, her efforts to rouse the other prisoners to rebel, and her interactions with the woman abducted from Earth. And in the end, when she realizes that she is about to be overcome, she chooses a memory that will give her quiet strength in the internal, eternal struggle she will face against Amaunet.

Quiet Strength won first place in the 2007 Isis Awards. When you read it, you’ll understand why.

Why This Must Be Read: In this powerful AU, Amaunet is captured by SG-1 and Sha’re is freed. But the triumph can only be bittersweet… because this takes place in Season Six, and Daniel isn’t there.

This is the amazing story of Sha’re’s journey to emotional recovery and equilibrium. Follow in her steps as she mourns her husband’s absence, moving among his things to try and taste his presence; develops a beautifully real friendship with Sam, whose experience with Jolinar allows for a special empathy; handles Mackenzie and other irrating facets of life in the SGC with aplomb; and finds her own place, her own strength, and her own heart.

There are fantastic cameos from Janet and Teal’c – and even Jonas! – but this story is mostly Sha’re’s, and Sam’s. Rydra Wong gives us the Sha’re that Daniel fell in love with, and makes us fall in love with her all over again.

Why This Must Be Read: In the past, I recced a wonderfully feel-good story about Sha're surviving FIAD, and Daniel and Sha're getting their happily-ever-after ending. In this powerful fic, Sha're survives FIAD – and then she and Daniel discover that happily-ever-after isn't all that easy. And as the events surrounding Shifu play themselves out, and Sha're is denied her son through Oma's and Daniel's actions... well.

All this slowly unfolds as background to the actual story, which essentially retells Meridian with the inclusion of a rather estranged Sha're. While she and Daniel still love each other, there's also a great deal of strain between them. Sha're sees Oma as the being that stole her son, and now she wants to take her husband, too? And will Daniel's feelings of guilt, and reluctance to - as he sees it - betray Sha're yet again, force him to refuse Oma's offer, even if it means his final death?

Strongly written with beautifully rendered emotions and reactions, If I Could Go On Sleeping offers us a bleakly realistic picture of two people, scarred and confused, trying to find their way towards acceptance. There's wonderful support from the other members of the SGC – and, in particular, an amazing confrontation between Sha're and Teal'c that speaks of deep understanding. Great Jack moments, and Sam moments, and Janet moments… Add a terrific altercation between Sha're and Jonas Quinn, and a clearly warm friendship between Sha're and Sam and Janet, and a final line with parallels that will leave you gasping, and you've got a rewrite of Meridian that you'll remember for a long, long time.

Why This Must Be Read:  This creepily beautiful story takes place sometime in the middle of Daniel's ten-second/two-week vision that Sha're gives him in the moments before her death. Metaphor upon dreamscape upon nightmare, Danvers paints possible visions that Daniel might have experienced, all leading to the two things that mattered to Sha're most: finding her son, and forgiving Teal'c.

Like Daniel, we're not quite sure what's real and what isn't, but it's all riveting. There's team support, even if all Teal'c can manage is to send a message, "Tell Daniel Jackson…" There's dizzying flashes of Sha're in the most bizarre circumstances, including dressed as a 50's housewife or cooing over the Harcesis child with Daniel's dead mother. Most powerful, however, is Daniel's eventual acceptance of the real difference between Ammonet and Sha're, and what he himself might have been willing to do if his and Teal'c's roles had been reversed.

Forever In a Day was a confusing enough episode that I've seen many fanfic writers make the mistake of insisting that canon includes Daniel actually leaving the SGC while he mourned for Sha're's death. Danvers takes that confusion several steps further, and it's great fun to go along for the ride.

Link: Eurydice Ascending

Why This Must Be Read: Eurydice Ascending should be read by any Daniel fan who believes that, for once, the poor boy deserves a happy ending. Take the first five minutes of Forever In a Day, then make a sharp left turn into this story. Maybe Teal'c was armed with a zat instead of his staff weapon... the author never gives the specifics, but that doesn't matter. What does matter is that this amazing fic gives us the wonderful, fiery Sha're that Daniel fell in love with during the movie and allows her to fight for her freedom.

The story opens on the steps of the Cimmerian Stargate, as Ammonet breaks away from Daniel and Sam just in time to be transported, alone, into the Labyrinth. From there, the story splits into three threads: Sha're's struggle to reach the Hammer and kill Ammonet, Daniel and Sam's journey to get to the Labyrinth in time to help Sha're, and the deft stonewalling taking place at the SGC to give them enough time to accomplish their goals. It's so easy to visualize this story as a gripping two-part episode; and quite frankly, considering subsequent events, how much would the show's direction have to have changed to compensate for allowing Daniel to avoid this final tragedy?

There are so many things about this fic that I love. First and foremost, there's Sha're. I always felt that the show cheated us a little by not giving us a chance to meet the feisty, brave woman who dared to show Daniel the forbidden heiroglyphics and then inspired her brother and his friends to start the rebellion against Ra. Here, we do get a chance to meet that woman, as she fights against Ammonet's control with every means at her disposal, no matter how dangerous. The inner monologue between host and symbiote runs fast and furious, and you'll be cheering for her every step of the way.

The Daniel and Sam sections alternate between their points of view with good effect. Together with Gairwyn (one of my favorite semi-recurring characters), they make the trip to the Labyrinth in agonized worry about what might happen before they get there. There's plenty of angsting about what might happen afterwards - both the risk to Sam's career for her unsanctioned actions and how damaged Sha're might be from her experience - along with some nice references to Jolinar and wonderful teamy support.

The most entertaining aspect of the story is what's busy happening back at the SGC. It becomes clear from the beginning of the story that Sam and Daniel didn't have permission to take Sha're to the Hammer. With Colonel Kennedy of The Enemy Within infamy yapping at their heels, the entire staff of the SGC take matters into their own hands, delaying and obstructing Kennedy's efforts to get the trio back before their mission is completed. At first, the reader assumes that it's only Jack's work; but as the story continues to unfold, it's delightful to realize that everyone, from Makepeace sending his own man AWOL to the techies that deliberately crash the 'gate computers with a multi-player Doom II game, are rooting for Daniel, Sha're, and their happy ending.

By the time the story ends, we're treated to some great cameos from Kasuf and Katherine, Janet at her Napoleonic Warmonger best, and the wistful promise that subsequent storylines like Shifu could have just as easily played out with Sha're still at Daniel's side. This story is an "episode fix" in the true meaning of the term, and how I wish this was what really happened!
