Why This Must Be Read: This is a sweet glimpse of Abydos after the events of Stargate: the Movie, as Daniel tries to explain the nature of myth and art and legend to Skaara and the boys. Add an amused Sha're in the background and some wonderful imagery, and you're left with a charming picture (if you'll pardon the pun) of that happy time on Abydos when the people were truly free.

When Skaara’s friends find Sha’re beginning to paint the story of the rebellion on the walls of the temple, they start yelling.

Why This Must Be Read: This gentle little ficlet offers Sha're's reflections on Daniel and the oddly-wet world he left for Abydos. There is sweetness here, made more poignant by what we know will be lost. But whether it's the dulled blades of his razor or the showers and baths that are no longer available, Sha're has the satisfaction of knowing that her Danyel chose her over all the luxuries of Earth.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a superb sketch of early S1 Daniel, trying to settle back into life on Earth when his heart is still on Abydos and his soul is still out there, looking for Sha're. Aching and real, and really good.

It felt like coming back to life, slowly and painfully, not all at once the way he had in Ra's sarcophagus. He wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, but he was sure that it wasn't something he wanted. But it didn't matter what he wanted. He had to remember how to live here, at least for a while.

Why This Must Be Read: Here's a neat little AU twist on Legacy: what if Teal'c never got close enough to Daniel for the Goa'uld-killer to transfer, and Daniel ended up under Kasuf's care on Abydos instead? Especially when you consider which Abydos-related episode takes place shortly after Legacy...

An interesting might-have-been that makes an awful lot of sense and a very interesting read!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a haunting glimpse of life on Abydos during the year of peace that Sha'uri and Daniel had before the Stargate reopened. I love Sha'uri's perspective here - her mischievousness, her thought processes, her cultural upbringing. There is love and humor and satisfaction... and the first trickling of unease, with that last line more ominous than Sha'uri or Daniel can ever know.

I adore stories set on Abydos, and this one is more evocative than most. It's the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning -- either way, it's well worth reading!

Why This Must Be Read: In this fabulous character study, we glimpse a missing scene from Secrets and a confrontation between Daniel and Teal'c.

There is so much power here: Teal'c's recognition of Sha're as her own person, rather than the victim of circumstance; Daniel locking away emotion to assess and analyze, and Teal'c's helplessness before his relentless powers of persuasion; and finally, the rock-solid trust they both have for one another, and their determination to salvage what they can from an impossible situation.

Aurora does a truly marvelous job of summing up Teal'c and Daniel's friendship here, so go and read it right now!

Why This Must Be Read: With Archaeology, Nightspear brings her brilliant AU full circle, as Daniel turns 18 and finally becomes a full-fledged member of SG-1.

This fourth and final novel in the Daniel of Abydos series covers the events of S4, with the differences in a world where Daniel was born and raised on Abydos, coming to Earth as a teenager. Beautifully written, with loving detail and attention, Nightspear explores this very different Daniel, shaped by other life experiences but still possessed with the same intellect, sheer stubbornness, and strength of personality as the Dr. Daniel Jackson we all know so well.

Some die who survived in canon; others live who died. (And if you're like me, you'll spend several chapters in breathless dread, waiting to see if a certain character suffers the same fate as he does in canon, too.) Daniel learns the true meaning of vengeance and grief and coming of age and acceptance, and you'll find yourself deeply moved by his journey, his team, and the friendships he cherishes.

Nightspear has crafted a brilliant AU, and while I'm sorry to see it finished, her ending truly does Daniel of Abydos justice. If you've read her other three novels, you'll want to start reading immediately; if you haven't, I suggest beginning with Translations. Trust me: you'll be very glad you did!

Why This Must Be Read: This assorted five things list is a real treat, giving us glimpses of Daniel across a wide spectrum of time. Teenaged Daniel, Daniel on Abydos, Daniel during the series (wondertwins moment!), Daniel on Atlantis, Daniel post-series - all here, all good, and all so very right.

Poignant, amusing, heartbreaking, thought-provoking - you'll enjoy every one of these, and wish that Emily had written more of them.

On Abydos, Daniel had a father-in-law that meddled and gave him unwanted advice about his sex life, a brother-in-law that sometimes drank too much, passed out in their tent, and didn't bother to apologize in the morning, and a wife who stole the blankets.

Why This Must Be Read: This fantastic, novel-length AU story gives us a 15-year-old Daniel Jackson, who grew up on Abydos (Mel and Claire opened the Stargate in '82, and stayed behind) and is now training at the SGC to help fight against the Goa'uld and get his brother and sister, Sha'uri and Skaara, back home. I have already recced the wonderful Translations, which covers this AU's version of Season One. Now, in Diplomacy, Night Spear treats us to fascinating twists and turns in canon, exploring the different ways events turn in Seasons 2-3 when a younger Daniel is present at the SGC, but not an active member of SG-1

The fic is technically WIP, since only 18 of 26 chapters are currently posted. But you'll want to start reading this right now - for the lovely characterization, the impeccable writing, the tight plotting, the twisting of storylines (Secrets and Thor's Chariot as one!), and the fixing of canon loopholes. There is less onscreen Teal'c and Daniel friendship than there was in Translations, but the amazing Jack and Daniel friendship will more than make up for it. My two current favorite scenes include Jack teaching teenaged Daniel how to handle a weapon, with the memory of Charlie looming; and the awesome rendition of The Fifth Race, which is somehow even better than the version on the show.

Make sure you've got plenty of time, though; it stands at over 160,000 words now, and once you get started, you won't be able to stop!

Why This Must Be Read: Rigel captures the beauty and richness of Abydos in this haunting fic, as Sha'uri contemplates her Danyel and wonders if she can keep him tethered to the sands of reality.

I love stories that give us Sha're's culture and background, and Rigel paints a lush, lovely picture of her beliefs, her fears, and her determination. There are hints and portents of the future, aching imagery, her acceptance of Daniel's nature and her careful efforts to guide those instincts towards life and contentedness. Metaphorical and literal threads of sky and sand and water, all woven together for a story of beautiful, thoughtful melancholy.

Read Rigel's fic slowly, and with the care it deserves - and just try not to shiver, at the end.

Or, most of all, Rigel's enchanting portrayal of Abydos, in which she creates the rich and vibrant society that embraced Daniel as one of its own.

This story is a treat. Read it slowly, and savor.

I love how it takes slow steps, and a span of four years, to reach the point where both forgiveness is offered and accepted. Why This Must Be Read:
This haunting, elegant fic, set within the final scenes of the movie, touches upon Daniel and Sha'uri determining their future, but is mostly about Sha'uri and Jack.

Abyssis' intelligent, intuitive version of Sha'uri is wise enough to sense the darkness that lingers around her new husband's friend, and she worries that he needs something to act as his anchor. There is lovely backstory, and dreamy culture-building, and the pain of a quiet full circle, as the gift that was given to assauge one death is returned to help share in the grief of another.

This story will break your heart. And then you'll want to read it all over again.

Why This Must Be Read: It may seem strange to rec a story in the Sha're category when the fic takes place after her death. But this lovely, moving piece is very much about Sha're, and the inheritance she left for her people.

I adore stories that offer an insight into Abydon culture, and Emily offers a beautiful look at the mourning rituals that take place in the wake of Forever In a Day. Daniel struggles to conform to the formalities, but his memories of his wife, and his regrets and distress, make it difficult... Until Kasuf leaves him a tangible reminder of the legacy Sha're left behind, and the part Daniel played in offering it to her in the first place.

Achingly bittersweet and powerful in its simplicity, this story is a tribute - to Sha're, to Daniel, and to the people of Abydos.

That’s an awful lot to pack into less than 350 words, but Tripoli manages it with style. In this five things, Emily highlights the inevitable struggles that Daniel undergoes in his acclimation to life on Abydos, and how Sha’re quietly smooths his path without him even realizing it. These range from the caring wife to the careful cook, from the narrow-eyed sister to the slightly exasperated diplomat. But most beautifully of all, there’s the Sha’re that lives in my brain, and that I wish Daniel could have loved for a little longer: Sha're can make him live outside of his own head like no one he ever met before. Why This Must Be Read: Redbyrd treats us to a retelling of the movie and the year before COTG from Jack's POV, neatly filling in the missing scenes with her usual talented style.

Jack's voice is real and engaging – and rather colorful! – as he takes us through the events of the movie, fleshing out his scenes with the events that took place off-screen, including the shift from "Colonel" and "Jackson" to "Jack" and "Daniel." Then we get the year in between, including how Jack managed to convince West that Daniel was dead, the blossoming of his friendship with Katherine, the quiet divorce, and his coming to terms with his new life… and then those momentous words, "It has to do with the Stargate."

Redbyrd is an absolute master at filling in the blanks and giving us the backdrop of an episode. This long and satisfying fic is a wonderful look at Jack's evolution from the hard-eyed colonel of the movie to the "Jack O'Neill… with two Ls" that we all love.

Campfire Stories

Why This Must Be Read: "Daniel was aware of the power of remembrance to shape a community."

This fic has a little bit of everything that I enjoy about Stargate – history, and the making of mythology, and friendship, and continuity. In some places it's so lyrical and beautiful that it hurts, and in some places it's so aching and poignant that it hurts. But I love every bit of it.

Campfire Stories arcs across the history of Stargate – from its very beginnings in the movie until sometime in S7 – from the point of view of the people of Abydos, as they relate the tales of Danyel and O'Neill and the Goa'uld as they perceive them. We see their customs, and how their lives and stories are shaped by the events of Stargate: The Movie, COTG, Secrets, FIAD, Pretence... and finally, heartbreakingly, how Daniel creates his own ritual in the seventh season, remembering Abydos when there's nothing tangible left to touch.

If you love Abydos, and cherish the memory of Earth's first victory against the Goa'uld, then this story is unquestionably for you.
