Why This Must Be Read: Stargate is at its best when it asks the hard questions. This time, in the wake of the NID's mistreatment of civilians during Nightwalkers, it's Nyan and Jonas who consider the ethical implications, both on Earth and how it would have played out on their own planets.

I love the outsider perspective, the hints of loneliness from the aliens who settled on Earth, and the sadness of the resignation with which Nyan and Jonas accept that life just goes on. Superbly written, like everything from Magistrate.

Why This Must Be Read: I love stories that give us an outsider's perspective on the SGC. This fic follows Izzy Satterfield after the events of Proving Ground as she tries to find her place, giving us just the right amount of glimpses into canon events while still staying properly at the edges. Not everyone needs -- or should be -- in the spotlight, and this story strikes the perfect balance, giving depth and personality to a character we barely got to meet onscreen. Engaging, well-written, and an excellent POV of life at Stargate Command.

Why This Must Be Read: This charming missing scene from Crystal Skull gives us Nyan and Robert Rothman, trying to figure out Daniel's mysterious disappearance... complete with not-quite-audio commentary from an out-of-phase Daniel. Sparkling snark, delightful characterization, and so very Daniel!

Why This Must Be Read: Here is absolutely marvelous Teal'c and Vala, on the edges beyond the missions -- plans for future road trips, card games with various SGC personnel, watching television together. Deft characterization, lovely voices, light humor, a dash of teamy goodness, and the wry amusement of two aliens amidst these wacky Tau'ri. A truly wonderful read!

Why This Must Be Read: Nightspear concludes one of my all-time favorite AUs with the fifth in the series, Journeys, covering the events in her Daniel of Abydos universe from mid-S5 through mid-S7.

Daniel of Abydos originally began as a kind of kidfic (and nonetheless made me fell in love with it!), but by the time this final novel begins, Daniel is already an adult and a full-fledged member of SG-1. Still, his relative youth and the changes in this Au's backstory means that Revanna, Kelowna, Abyss, Changeling, Full Circle, Orpheus, and other canon incidents happen very differently, with a fascinating exploration of the challenges of Ascension and the limitations and rules that Daniel has to face. ("Tell Jacob to stop" will break your heart, trust me.) Some die who lived in canon; others live who died.

I love Nyan's brave attempt to take Daniel's place on SG-1, and the twist of Jonas earning his position partially by virtue of being untainted by guilt. I love the way Nightspear wove the mythology of the later seasons into Daniel's version of S6 and made it work. I love her Abydos and its people, and the courage and determination they continue to show. But most of all, I enjoy Nightspear's loving attention to detail, her craft at characterization, and the wonderful way she depicts these characters who are just a little different from the SG-1 we know and love, but are delightfully, perfectly themselves.

Why This Must Be Read: Redbyrd is one of the best ep tag writers in the fandom. In Breaking New Ground, Redbyrd presents us with the events of New Ground, including some fascinating backstory and a satisfying epilogue, from Nyan’s point of view.

Nyan has always been a favorite minor character of mine; he showed courage, intelligence, self-honesty, and sacrifice – and, of course, he got our team home. In this excellent fic, Redbyrd not only explores Nyan’s personal history to give us some insight into Nyan’s character and determination, but also gives us the missing scenes to explain much of what happened within the confines of the episode itself.

Redbyrd and Episode Related always go hand-in-hand, and this story is no exception!

Why This Must Be Read: It’s one of fandom’s favorite clichés: SG-1 gets turned into small children. Raven, herself, cheerfully acknowledges this. But this fic is also just plain fun. And it’s thanks to the secondary cast of characters – Hammond, Janet, Jacob, and even Robert Rothman and Nyan (two of my favorites, to be honest!) – that this story is such an entertaining read.

While the antics of the children are enjoyable – Jack’s Froot Loops, Daniel’s passive resistance against speaking (or wearing shoes), Sam’s flat refusal to wear anything pink and frilly – it’s really the reactions of the adults around them that make the reader smile. There’s Rothman’s frustration that his boss has turned into what he considers to be a horrible child; there’s Jacob’s secret delight at having some time back with his little girl again. And there’s Teal’c’s bemusement at the personalities of his younger teammates, and Nyan’s drive to help, and Janet’s struggle to communicate with Daniel…

This one is fluffy and fun, with a little character study sneaking around the edges. And it’s definitely a fic that you’re sure to enjoy.

Why This Must Be Read:  It's just a day in the life of SG-1... In other words, expect things to be absolutely insane. :)

There are so many things I love about this fic. The humor isn't OTT, but rather inherent in the ridiculous situations caused by the characters acting like themselves and getting into trouble. The dialogue is snappy and rings true, and even the characters recognize the ridiculousness of their situation. C'est la Vie... That's just life in the SGC.

While the story technically begins offworld, Daniel's frantic escape through the Gate just serves as the introduction to the actual story, which is essentially SG-1's antics on the base. Of course Teal'c, when investigating witchcraft, would snag a research volume from Daniel's shelves and borrow Cassie's copy of The Craft - and see no difference between the two. Of course Jack would do anything to discover exactly what Daniel's middle name means, from pumping the other members of the team to quizzing the members of Daniel's departments. Of course Daniel, when discovering exactly what Sam and Teal'c are trying to do, would offer his help, based on anthropological research and his own experiences on Abydos.

Of course it all goes wrong.

And, most delightful of all, of course it's Janet who manages to solve Sam's problem in the end. Just call her the Little Witch Doctor. Other highlights include Daniel's one-sided (or, at least, one-heard) argument with Sam, Teal'c's " I informed you we should not have used the foxglove," and Jack's final triumph.

Did I mention that Nyan and Rothman guest star, and that their sections are as funny as the rest of the fic? "I want to be like you when I grow up..." Hee!

It would be ridiculously easy to visualize this taking place in an actual episode, running concurrent as the character development to some other plot. This fic is a fun, light read that is sure to make the reader smile.

Why This Must Be Read: I believe this type of fic is called meta fic - the characters are conscious of being "fictives" in a science fiction show.

Another name, unquestionably, is crack!fic.

I have a fond spot for Nyan and Rothman, for some odd reason. I also have a fond spot for guest stars that vanish into the Stargate and are never seen again, even if the fans really want them to come back. So it's easy to see why I found this parody so much fun!

In this unquestionably twisted story, Nyan, together with Robert Rothman, runs the transdimensional vortex that houses the gone-but-usually-not-forgotten minor characters of SG-1. With so very many residents, it's inevitable for personalities to clash. The fic takes us through a typical adminstrative day for Nyan, as he deals with complaints from the various characters who aren't happy with their housing. Nyan deals smoothly with the likes of Hathor and Garek squabbling over who is the real, true deity, and Kerry Johnson's alarm at rooming with Anise, who scans her for that mysterious allure that allows her to attract Jack O'Neill. At least Michael and Jenny approve of what he's doing...
