I am honored to introduce a brand new category: Bra'tac recs! Someone had to teach Teal'c how to be so awesome, after all. :)

And this marks two years of reccing in this marvelous community. Thanks for putting me up with me, guys.  (We're celebrating over at my place!)

Why This Must Be Read: This thoughtfully eloquent fic shows us the future of the galaxy through Bra'tac's eyes: his thoughts on humans, on the Jaffa's world-building, on Teal'c, on leadership, on himself... and on the creation and formation of legend. Minxy uses the intriguing vehicle of a human bard singing of Teal'c and Thilana (one of the most engaging guest stars in S10) as a backdrop to Bra'tac's thoughts, and you'll find yourself equally fascinated by the lilting language of the ballad and Bra'tac's memories.

For an extra treat, Minxy wrote DVD commentary on this marvelous story. Read both of them carefully - they're a tribute to a wonderful character and his amazing journey.

Why This Must Be Read: Teal'c goes home after a glorious battle in Apophis' name.

Too many people forget that Teal'c carries the burden of decades of personal history in the service of Apophis. In Pale Battalions, Beatrice Otter gives us a younger Teal'c, going through the motions – not quite ready to rebel, but all too aware that something is wrong.

There's bleakness contrasted by the easy convictions of those around him, and the hollowness of victory and reward when flashbacks of death still haunt him. This isn't the Teal'c we know, not yet – but this is the man who will become that Teal'c, and it's marvelous to catch a glimpse of the stirring of doubt and disillusion.

This story was remixed into the incredible None But Ourselves by [livejournal.com profile] cofax7, which carries the painful thread of this forward to SG-1's time. But Pale Battalions is a weighty, thoughtful piece in its own right: a Teal'c who wonders, and watches, but still goes through the motions. Read this one and savor.

Link: Five AUs in which Teal'c was raised on Earth

Why This Must Be Read: This enchanting Five Things explores the possibilities of how Teal'c might have come to Earth, and the way history alters itself with his indomitable presence on our planet.

Since a young Teal'c's life is set in the early 1900s, the rest of the team is understandably absent from most of these scenarios. But the AUs that Komos spins for us are enchanting: an Earth under Cronus' domination, a quiet life in the Carribean, the generations who carried on his legacy, a sleeper agent turned against his master, and – most inspiring – the leader of the Pan-African Union. The AUs will fascinate and move you in turns, and you'll be left with the conviction that no matter what the circumstances, Teal'c will always and forever be awesome.

(No snippets this time. Just go and read, and fall in love with Teal'c a little more.)

Why This Must Be Read: This charming little fic presents us with an aspect of Teal’c’s life, post-symbiote, when he discovers his first cavity.

Minnow lightly touches on each part of the story, yet gives a clear impression of a greater, more detailed scene just beneath the surface. We traverse from Teal’c’s dental visit to the team’s reactions to his discussions with Bra’tac on the subject of health and medicine. There is the teamy goodness of Sam’s post-cavity filling offering, Jack’s e-mail of support, and Daniel’s inevitable diversion into etymology. But most of all, there’s the lovely insight into Teal’c’s character, as he takes his cavity in stride and recognizes it for what it truly is: another step on the journey towards shaping the Jaffa into something far greater than the Goa’uld could have ever envisioned.

Why This Must Be Read: My usual humor preferences involve fics where the characters behave perfectly normally (well, as normal as SG-1 ever is) but are faced with bizarre circumstances. This fic is very, very different, with various fan favorites acting completely OOC…

And yet I love it anyway.

That’s probably because of Hammond, who is delightfully in character throughout. On the day after Halloween, he faces down the most incredible group of shame-faced people, including SG-1, Bra’tac, Jacob Carter, Thor, and an Ascended Daniel, scolding them for their inappropriate behavior. (The role Jack plays with Thor is scarily appropriate.) Then you get to the final line, and discover the little twist that shows that George Hammond is always, always solidly in control.

It’s short and silly and fluffy and it will make you giggle. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

From the Ashes

Why This Must Be Read: From the Ashes seems, at first, to be a rather typical story – Teal'c comes across a sick Daniel, asleep in the commissary, and shooes him off to the infirmary. But when the rest of SG-1 gate to a planet and meet up with the natives, it takes a recovery team to bring them back… and that's when disaster really strikes.

Sam Walker gives us superb Teal'c characterization with his anguish over a truly tragic accident and his determination to make it right. Ancient and obscure Jaffa rituals are such a fun plot device, after all! And this one takes a particularly fascinating turn, as Teal'c joins Daniel on a journey through his life's experiences… until the final moving confrontation on the "earth sea."

With Bra'tac in usual fine form, teamy goodness, and some great support from Janet and Hammond, this Teal'c and Daniel friendship fic is one that you'll remember for a long time.

Of Warriors and Scholars

Why This Must Be Read: Cheerful full disclosure here: Kellifer wrote this ficlet at my request, so I'm kinda partial to it. :)

One of the most fascinating aspects of the evolution of Daniel's character is how he is perceived by the Jaffa, particularly Teal'c and Bra'tac. The first time Bra'tac met Daniel, he treated him with contempt and threatened to snap his wrist; by the end of Season 3, he was treating him with enough reverence to lower his weapon before Jack did in Maternal Instinct. And by Season 9, Daniel and Bra'tac were teamed together to investigate Teal'c's disappearance, clearly working as equals.

So I asked Kellifer to write a story about Bra'tac's evolving respect for Daniel, and this is what she came up with. Absolutely delicious, with a great Jack moment included. It's Daniel and Bra'tac under fire, with Bra'tac making some observations that leave Daniel a little lost and a lot confused… Oh, just go and read it. It's short and very sweet.
