figs_sg1_rec: (bra'tac)
I am honored to introduce a brand new category: Bra'tac recs! Someone had to teach Teal'c how to be so awesome, after all. :)

And this marks two years of reccing in this marvelous community. Thanks for putting me up with me, guys.  (We're celebrating over at my place!)

Why This Must Be Read: This thoughtfully eloquent fic shows us the future of the galaxy through Bra'tac's eyes: his thoughts on humans, on the Jaffa's world-building, on Teal'c, on leadership, on himself... and on the creation and formation of legend. Minxy uses the intriguing vehicle of a human bard singing of Teal'c and Thilana (one of the most engaging guest stars in S10) as a backdrop to Bra'tac's thoughts, and you'll find yourself equally fascinated by the lilting language of the ballad and Bra'tac's memories.

For an extra treat, Minxy wrote DVD commentary on this marvelous story. Read both of them carefully - they're a tribute to a wonderful character and his amazing journey.

Why This Must Be Read:
At first glimpse, this short story seems to open with an almost prosaic scene: Teal’c and SG-1 coming through the Gate, with Daniel there to welcome them. Then, slowly, it dawns on you: who Daniel is, now, at the SGC. What Teal’c is doing. The years of friendship that allows for a shorthand of even brief sentences to carry a wealth of meaning.

There’s gentle humor and the enchanting prospect of a beautiful future. There’s the inherent promise of a marvelous backstory, and the satisfaction of seeing these characters we love at peace. Sam and Jack aren’t physically present for this one, but they’re solidly part of Teal’c and Daniel’s lives – and it’s a life that I still hope Niamea will continue to create for us, because this is one happy ending I would love to see for SG-1!

ETA: Whee! Niamea wrote an additional pre-Ithaca snippet over here!

Taking Leave

Why This Must Be Read: Niamaea wrote this charming story for [info]sg1_ever_after. It gives us Sam and Daniel, sometime in the not-so-distant future, facing the prospect of a decommissioned SG-1 and Daniel’s compulsary retirement from going off-world. They know that within the next few years, the SGC will be going public and their lives will turn upside-down all over again; but what will they do until then?

Daniel’s enchanting solution is utterly, delightfully in character, as he proposes that he, Sam, and Teal’c take the time to really explore the one planet that they haven’t had the chance to truly experience. There’s warmth, and caring, and friendship, and a truly elegant tagline that promises a happy ending for the characters we love. What more could you want?

Why This Must Be Read: This fun, short ficlet was written for the Keep the Gate Open challenge from [info]sg1_ever_after. It gets to the “happy ending” part through a slightly manic detour, but that more or less defines SG-1, doesn’t it?

When Ori warships appear in Earth’s skies, Jack finds himself unceremoniously transported onto a ship by SG-1 in a last-ditch effort to stop the attack. After rejecting Daniel’s plan – which starts with having someone kill him – they quickly cycle through Plans B, C, and D, none of which involve allowing Vala to fly one of the F-302s…

Written with humor and affection, this entertaining futurefic is a delightful tribute to teamy goodness at its best.

Why This Must Be Read: These hilarious paired ficlets give us SG-1 sometime in the future, after the Stargate Program has gone public. The next step, of course, is inevitable: SG-1 action figures! Enjoy team snarkiness, black humor, and some classic Jack and Daniel childish one-up-manship. And don’t forget to pick up a package of Jaffa soldiers: After all, what were SG-1 without firefights and mortal peril?

Why This Must Be Read: Knightshade presents us with an interesting look at the run-up to 2010 in the original timeline, as Teal’c chooses to undergo a medical procedure under the auspices of the Aschen.

Filled with stoicism, symbolism, and the very essence of Teal’c, Golden also gives us Jack, despite his unhappiness and suspicions, coming to stand at Teal’c’s side in support. There’s the bond of intense friendship, and consequences of choice – that of pain, that of allies, and that of selecting one’s future, when the choices of the present leave that future echoing and empty.

I love a good story that makes the reader think. For all its brevity, Golden does that in spades.

Why This Must Be Read: There have been lots of futurefics written of late. This one is funny and fluffy and gives us that happily-ever-after vibe… and, of course, leather. Which is always a bonus!

S9 Team plus Jack. Outrageous theft, humor, teamy goodness, and the promise that the adventure will always continue. (And leather.) Really, what more to you need?

A Million Years Into the Sky

Why This Must Be Read: Full disclaimer: I got to beta this. Lucky, lucky me. :)

Niamaea is one of the founders of [info]sg1_ever_after, a relatively new community about giving SG-1 happy endings. This amazing fic offers a heartbreakingly beautiful look at that happy ending, as Niamaea provides us with a universe that cares for her children and the long, gentle journey that the members of SG-1 take, one by one, to get there.

The first part of the story is told from Sam’s POV; the second, from Teal’c’s, in one of the most stunning characterizations I’ve ever seen for our beloved Jaffa. The entire fic is chock-full of fantastic insights: Sam’s epiphany into how Jack and Daniel’s personalities complete one another. The team’s careful manipulations to ensure that Daniel is “remembered to history for his life,” and not how he died, because that’s what he would have wanted most. Teal’c watching, from the perspective of his longer lifespan, as one by one, his teammates slip away – complete, and in peace. (And Teal’c’s choice for his third grandchild’s name brought tears to my eyes.)

While I would strongly call this fic gen, I didn’t add that to the categories, because it does include some mention of pairings peripherally – Ry’ac and Ka’ryn, for example. And Sam’s marriage to a teammate. But while the pairings are there, they are not the main import of the story – the quiet future, and the universe’s kindness, are what really matter.

“Shal’kek nem’ron,” he says.

Daniel shakes his head and corrects him. “You lived free, Teal’c.”

It was difficult to choose a snippet for this, as much of the story is snapshots of events that span decades of time. I know this rec is longer than usual, but this story richly deserves it. Go read it, slowly, and savor.

Pairing/Characters: Team (classic SG-1 plus Vala and Mitchell), gen
Rating/Warnings: PG; sort-of apocafic, but a happy ending anyway. Spoilers through first half of S10, but only vague ones.
Summary: Earth might be giving up, but SG-1 isn't.

As Planned

"Well, he didn't do that much," Jack said.  "Saved the world a few times, sure, but he hardly ever got his departmental evaluations in on time. Plus, he's been pretty careless.  He's lost a lot of bandanas, and those things don't grow on trees.  And he's gotten killed in the line of duty more than once.  The paperwork's been awful."

"Thanks, Jack," Daniel said.

"I still think it's too small," Vala said.

"Well, look at it this way," Jack said.  "We're about to take off, and we have to travel light.  This way, Daniel can take it with him."

"About the 'taking off' part, Sir…" Cameron began.

"You all know what you're supposed to do, right?" Jack asked.

"We have done this before, Sir," Sam reminded him.

"I haven't," Cam said.  "And that's not a problem, but I'm wondering – why like this?"

Jack just looked at him.  "That's how we've always done it," he said.

Almost a Statesman

Why This Must Be Read: Because there are way too many of us that wish that this wasn't in the AU category, and think that the Jaffa deserved a better storyline than the one they got slapped with in S9-10.

The story diverges from canon sometime towards the beginning of S7 – most specifically, Death Knell never happened, and the Jaffa remained at the Alpha Site. Written intelligently from the POV of Ry'ac, this is the story of "Teal'c of the Tau'ri" – with both the positive and negative connotations abscribed to that nomenclature. The fic draws us a picture equally based in hope and realism, as the Jaffa, new to this strange, wonderful thing called "freedom," stumble along the path towards a brighter future.

Teal'c, as percieved by his son, is simply awesome. The cameos from the rest of SG-1 are wonderfully in character, as are the minor canon characters, like Rak'nor and Ry'ac, and some excellently drawn original ones. This is what I imagined Teal'c would become, once the Jaffa won their freedom – and despite SG-1's temporary loss, I only wish the Jaffa would have had him as their gain.
