Why This Must Be Read: With Archaeology, Nightspear brings her brilliant AU full circle, as Daniel turns 18 and finally becomes a full-fledged member of SG-1.
This fourth and final novel in the Daniel of Abydos series covers the events of S4, with the differences in a world where Daniel was born and raised on Abydos, coming to Earth as a teenager. Beautifully written, with loving detail and attention, Nightspear explores this very different Daniel, shaped by other life experiences but still possessed with the same intellect, sheer stubbornness, and strength of personality as the Dr. Daniel Jackson we all know so well.
Some die who survived in canon; others live who died. (And if you're like me, you'll spend several chapters in breathless dread, waiting to see if a certain character suffers the same fate as he does in canon, too.) Daniel learns the true meaning of vengeance and grief and coming of age and acceptance, and you'll find yourself deeply moved by his journey, his team, and the friendships he cherishes.
Nightspear has crafted a brilliant AU, and while I'm sorry to see it finished, her ending truly does Daniel of Abydos justice. If you've read her other three novels, you'll want to start reading immediately; if you haven't, I suggest beginning with Translations. Trust me: you'll be very glad you did!
