Leftovers, by Achaea (PG-13)

Rec Category: Jack O'Neill

Categories: Jack O'Neill, gen, drama, episode related, hurt/comfort, team, friendship, humor, action/adventure
Warnings: language, violence

Why This Must Be Read: In Leftovers, Acheaea gives us Jack and the rest of SG-1, eager to get back to normal after the harrowing events of Out of Mind and Into the Fire. But when they return to the SGC after their two weeks of leave, Jack discovers that Hathor and her little "friend" have left him a deadly going-away present… one that might seriously jeopardize his future as the leader of SG-1.

In the days and weeks that follow, there's humor and teamy goodness and sheer Jack stubbornness as he claws his way past the symbiote's planted suggestions and reasserts control of his actions and impulses. Jack paying Makepeace to hit him, Daniel pulling the most outrageous of bluffs when they're in trouble off-world, Janet and Hammond in fine form, guest spots for Jacob and Martouf… It's all here, all satisfying, and all fun!

(Like many older stories archived on Heliopolis, there are some formatting problems with italicized words. Leftovers is good enough to make it worth reading anyway.)

Face-off, by Jennghis Khan (PG)

Rec Category: Jack O'Neill

Pairing: none
Categories: Jack O'Neill, gen, team, humor, Makepeace
Warnings: none

Link: Face-off

Why This Must Be Read: When Jack gets just a little too carried away at his smugness at SG-1's "overwhelming coolness," he rashly agrees to a hockey match between his own team and Makepeace's Marines on SG-3. Then he discovers that Sam is a little too busy computing vectors with the hockey puck to pay any real attention to the game, Teal'c is having just a little too much fun smashing the puck into the stands and denting the seats, and Daniel… Well, Daniel is really good at tripping over his skates and sprawling on the ice.

We get Siler's guest spot as goalie, some ruthless manipulation of Daniel's ineptitude, and Jack's insane competitive streak that drives him inexorably onwards to the ultimate humiliation. There's humor and teamy goodness galore, and despite a rather smug Makepeace, SG-1's overwhelming coolness is readily apparent where it really counts… and everyone who reads this delightful story is going to cheer in agreement with Jack's final sentiment.

Training Day, by Random (PG-13)

Rec Category: Teamy goodness

Categories: team, gen, Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, Teal'c, drama, angst, episode related
Warnings: violence, Daniel-whumping
Author on LJ: randomfreshink

Why This Must Be Read: It's a brand new Random fic chock-full of teamy goodness and stellar characterization! Isn't that enough of a reason?

[In the interests of full disclosure, I should mention that I had the great pleasure of acting as Random's beta for this fic. Mind you, being Random's beta basically means getting to read really good stories before everyone else…]

In the wake of SG-1's rescue from Hathor in Into the Fire, civilians are required to undergo training under Makepeace's auspices. Sam and Teal'c are also invited to go along for some "team-building," and Jack, anxious about the inevitable clashes between Daniel and the Marines, manages to come along as "observer." He's sure that this is a really bad idea, but it can't be too disastrous… or can it?

There's Daniel's stubborn passive agressiveness against what he sees as utter stupidity, contrasted by Teal'c's frustration that "If there is to be no real danger, O'Neill, then what is the value in this?" We get Sam struggling to keep within the confines of military rank, even as she chafes at being forced to obey the orders of someone she knows is making a bad mistake. And Jack's running silent commentary says as much about him as it does about the events he witnesses…

And that's only the beginning, before the real drama begins. Oops – didn't anyone mention the natives on the "uninhabited" planet, not to mention the visitors through the Stargate?

By the end of this long, satisfying story, we've met a fascinating original character; we've witnessed Daniel in action as soldier, archeologist, diplomat, and peacemaker; we've seen Teal'c in grand First Prime mode as well as Teal'c among the Tauri; we've gotten Captain Carter at her absolute best; and we've been treated to Jack O'Neill as only Random can write him. Everyone shines in Training Day. Absolutely wonderful teamy goodness!

(There are two other civilians involved besides Daniel, by the way. Rothman is easy to spot, but identifying the third civilian made me splutter coffee all over my keyboard. Heh.)

Lost in Translation, by Vathara (PG)

Rec Category: gen

Pairing: none
Categories: team, gen, adventure, humor
Warning: alien-influenced hormones run amok
Author on LJ: unknown
Author's Website: Vathara's stories at FF.net
Link: Lost in Translation

Why This Must Be Read: Hilariously funny, everyone delightfully in character despite the rather precarious circumstances, exploring through the Stargate with a solid mythological background and skeletons in the Asgard closet… Really, what’s not to love?

A Goa’uld plots to bring down the Tau’ri with a terrible weapon, but fails to read the directions properly first. The ensuing chaos nearly destroys the SGC; SG-1 manages to save the day, but not before the confectionary sugar goes flying and the team ends up traipsing through the ‘Gate handcuffed to each other out of necessity. By Daniel’s instigation.

Set sometime in late season three; after FIAD, but before Shades of Grey, as Makepeace has a delicious cameo. Poor guy.
