Of Warriors and Scholars

Why This Must Be Read: Cheerful full disclosure here: Kellifer wrote this ficlet at my request, so I'm kinda partial to it. :)

One of the most fascinating aspects of the evolution of Daniel's character is how he is perceived by the Jaffa, particularly Teal'c and Bra'tac. The first time Bra'tac met Daniel, he treated him with contempt and threatened to snap his wrist; by the end of Season 3, he was treating him with enough reverence to lower his weapon before Jack did in Maternal Instinct. And by Season 9, Daniel and Bra'tac were teamed together to investigate Teal'c's disappearance, clearly working as equals.

So I asked Kellifer to write a story about Bra'tac's evolving respect for Daniel, and this is what she came up with. Absolutely delicious, with a great Jack moment included. It's Daniel and Bra'tac under fire, with Bra'tac making some observations that leave Daniel a little lost and a lot confused… Oh, just go and read it. It's short and very sweet.

Contrary to Popular Belief

Why This Must Be Read:  This intriguing little character study offers a new twist to Daniel's character. Is he really so oblivious as he sometimes appears to be? Does he really have no sense of danger, no instincts to duck? Or are his motives more deliberate than others might imagine?

I enjoyed this fic for its observations on Daniel and what really matters to him, and his unique definition of self-preservation. Pewter does a great job of defining what makes Daniel uniquely… well, Daniel.

(And yeah, it's probably set in S3 or S4, but I put it here anyway.)

not exactly titled, but possibly Stargate/Discworld

Why This Must Be Read:  While this story isn't officially about Meridian, the references to ascension make it close enough. And it's certainly worth the effort of finding somewhere to put it!

I'm fairly confident that you don't have to be a Terry Pratchett fan to appreciate this little drabble, but knowing the Discworld's Death and his foibles, especially his dislike for "quantum," probably makes it a lot funnier, especially Daniel's best line. Which I won't quote here, because I don't want to ruin it for you.

Come on, it's a drabble. It'll take you thirty-odd seconds to read it and will definitely make you grin. Go read it. :)

Why This Must Be Read:  Season 5 was a painful year for both Daniel and his fans, and many of my favorite fics from S5 are from writers I've already recced this month, so I'm going to kinda scoot past it. One angsty Meridian fic, one humorous one (black humor, anyway), and two character studies that could probably go in any later season, but I'm arbitrarily putting in S5 just because.

You have to give the writers credit (or maybe you don't) for making the SGC such an unfriendly place to Daniel by the end of S5 that he was willing to go with Oma in Meridian. This painful little stocktaking of Daniel's five years at the SGC, written by Zephyr in stark first person POV, sums it up all too neatly: one loss piled on top of another, including the loss of his true self. The final line, a direct quote from Meridian, will simply make you wince, because it makes all too much sense.

Short, bleak, and painfully honest, Zephyr's ficlet gives us a good look at Daniel's state of mind before he took that last walk up the ramp.
