Why This Must Be Read: In this corner, Teal'c: a man who turned his back on a lifetime, and has to struggle to reconcile the cultural mores of decades with the contradictions of the expectations of the Tau'ri. And in this corner, Sam: early S1 Sam with that chip on her shoulder, offering respect without question and disappointed in what she perceives as a lack in return.
Fantastic insight into the backstory that affects Teal'c's perception of women, with superb Teal'c POV throughout the fic. We get honest conversation, with unexpected gifts offered and accepted, and very much in character for them both. Equality is a great look at how the friendship of Sam and Teal'c began way back at the very beginning.
Teal'c the First Prime tore the symbiotes out of the pouches of women and had watched the charred carcasses of enemy Jaffa float by the window of his shuttle with a cold satisfaction. He saw young, earth brown faces of boys that could have been his son had fate turned and did not flinch when their skin or their hair would catch fire from a staff blast
Teal'c the husband had no such evil in him, and flinched a little when Drey'auc broke the neck of a chicken to eat for dinner and laughed at his childish disgust.
Teal'c does not entirely know who he should be when talking to Captain Carter as they walk across the broken rocky landscape of a planet that has no name, only a number and Captain Carter wipes the splatter of blood from her perfect porcelain skin, and not a drop of that blood is hers.
