Why This Must Be Read: This wasn't the rec I planned on making today, but I saw this - and loved this - and couldn't help but rec it, as soon as possible!
Julie gives us a wonderful character study of Sam, made even better by the realization that Sam is perfectly self-aware of these "flaws" and accepts them as part of her life. There's her understanding of why it didn't work with Pete, and why it won't work with any other man who isn't part of SG-1; her love for speed, and how she translates it into her civilian life; and most of all, the knowledge that her vocation has irrevocably changed her, and that there's no going back.
It's short, as most "five things" are, but well worth it.
It drove her nuts every time the guys insinuated her lack of a social life, because really, the Colonel's poker nights aside, they were just as bad as she was. But they had a point. She loved her job, loved it so much she let it take over every aspect of her life. Her interests, her friends, even her family were tangled into her job so tightly she'd never be able to tease them apart. It was why things with Pete spun out of control so quickly. The thing she craved the most about him was a connection to life outside the SGC. Something, just one thing that was hers. And then he wasn't anymore, yet one more piece of her life drawn in by the Stargate.
