Why This Must Be Read: Sam is struggling with questions of existential angst in the midst of Point of View, but Daniel is ready to help her through it.
This is Sam and Daniel friendship at its best: understanding one another, willing to listen, ready to challenge. A truly lovely, thoughtful read.
"Why does everyone keep asking me that?" she said, made it half rhetorical, then hit the save key and stood. That might at least give Daniel a hint.
It didn't seem to, since he took another few steps into her lab. "Well, we don't have a Kawalsky around to ask, do we? Who's everyone?"
Starting to gather her notes, scribbles of equations she'd been toying with--gravity to energy possible wave conversion values--she stopped long enough to glance at Daniel again. And she told him, kept it blunt and curt, "The colonel asked."
"Ah," Daniel nodded as if she'd said something wise. Reaching out, he tapped a finger on her lab table, careful not to touch her papers or her equipment or her cold coffee from sometime this morning. Then he asked, "What'd you tell him?"
"Do you have a couple of hours?"
Daniel frowned, his stare shifted up and to the right--and she was going to hit him if he pulled out his right hand and looked at his watch. Then he looked at her, settled on her other lab stool, and said, "Okay. Yeah…sure."
