Why This Must Be Read: Because this is Daniel. Daniel, knowing he's responsible for Sam getting badly hurt, and Jack knowing he's responsible because it's his job.
Daniel, bleak and conflicted and troubled and stubborn. Angsty and thinky and tearing the situation into little pieces so he can try and put the puzzle back together again. Clashing with Jack as only he can, because this is exactly how they both have to be.
There is fury here, and fear both for and of each other. And the last line has the same anguished honesty as the end of Menace that will leave you wincing for them both.
Too few writers give Daniel his edge and that quiet ruthlessness that makes him so dangerous. Magistrate is one of those that get it right.
