Why This Must Be Read: Salieri is always a master at wordcraft. This breathless story is no exception.
The story unspools from the muddled POV of a badly-hurt Sam off-world, as she absorbs the deeply affectionate care with which Mitchell and Teal'c and Daniel and Vala, each in turn, work to keep her alive. The reader absorbs Sam's pain and bewildered perceptions, deeply moved by the methods each team member utilizes, until that final beautiful tagline where Daniel wordlessly demonstrates just how much they'd give for the chance to bring her home.
For a relatively short story, this fic has incredible impact. Read carefully, and savor.
Her heart gutters. Goes cold. Turns to stone.
"Come back, Sam. Damnit, you come back."
Striking sparks from flint, Cameron breaks two of her ribs.
Daniel's mouth against hers blows gently, coaxing a thin flicker of light from the ashes.
When she opens her eyes, Cameron looks back at her. His mouth hangs open like it did the first time he saw a wormhole. Then he slumps back against the wall at the head of her cot and rubs his forehead with the heel of his hand. When he turns to her again, his eyes capture the pale light, and his words have to force themselves past clenched teeth and between his lips. He says, "Thank you."
He gets up and goes unsteadily out the door.
Daniel bends to press his lips to her forehead before he goes to follow him.
