Why This Must Be Read: This fascinating story leads us on a journey into that great unknown: the timeframe between the Jacksons' deaths and Daniel's years in college. Penknife deftly avoids the usual fan cliches and gives us short, sharp sketches of Daniel's various foster parents and the way their lives touched, bobbed against one another, and then moved on.
It's wonderful to see the Daniel we know, with all his confidence and intelligence and almost unconsious arrogance, slowly emerging over the years. You'll find yourself smiling along... until the final scene of lovely teamy goodness, and the sheer sucker-punch of that last line that nonetheless rings absolutely true.
