Why This Must Be Read: Teal'c in the wake of Serpent's Venom, learning to face trauma and scarring, both physical and mental. This is beautiful and wonderfully real, as Penknife explores the repercussions of Teal'c's torture and the way the team -- and especially Jack -- help him work his way back to normal.
Gorgeous. Powerful. Perfectly Jack, and indubitably Teal'c.
Jack's leaning against a tree, having to struggle to keep his eyes from closing in the warm sunlight, when there's the sound of Teal'c's staff weapon firing, and his head jerks up. He swings his P90 toward the sound, already moving, finding Carter with his eyes and motioning her to flank Teal'c on the other side. Daniel is down on one knee, his pistol drawn, searching the trees for movement.
Teal'c seems to be doing the same. Jack reaches his side and squints into the forest. What he can see is a lot of trees.
"What've we got?" he asks finally under his breath.
"I …" He doesn't look like he likes whatever he's about to say. "I believed there was something moving," he says finally. "I was mistaken."
"It was probably just some kind of animal," Sam says, lowering her P90.
"Probably," Jack says. "But this might be a good time to wrap it up."
Daniel starts packing up, with Sam covering him. Jack stays off to the side with Teal'c, his hand easy on the gun.
"There was nothing there," Teal'c says finally, low and angry.
"I know," Jack says, equally quietly. "That's why I'm calling it a day."
