Why This Must Be Read: Twelve short ficlets about the team and other characters, unexpectedly waylaid by routine matters on Earth that trigger powerful reactions to anyone involved with the Stargate. My favorite ones are Bill's and Walter's (excerpted below), but these are all so powerful: the recognition that once you know what's out there, even the most mundane events can never be quite the same.

Why This Must Be Read: Short and sweet, this fic showcases Janet wisely recognizing what Cassie needs when she's awash with the easy technological advances of Earth. Truly lovely, with a real early SG-1 feel.

She longed for the basic chores of home, busywork for the hands that calmed her mind and would, maybe, for a while, erase the images of her friends, family, her whole village dying around her.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a joyful episode tag to 1969, flashing between Walter following up on his paperwork and various characters following up on events that took place thirty years before (or long in the future). The ending is one of my all-time favorite tropes, and the entire fic is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Walter grinned. Best. Damn. Job. Ever.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a powerful, poignant exploration of Cassie's life, beginning on Hanka, through Janet's death, Jack's prolonged MIA status at the beginning of S7, and the initially-unwanted quest to get SG-1 safely back home from the far future in 1969. I love the way Ivorygates gives Cassie a different mindset and different perspectives, and the sheer hard work and challenges involved in getting the team back to the right time. Those missing loops of time are so intriguing, and this story treats us to a fascinating look at what might have been.

Why This Must Be Read: Sam and Janet's friendship on SG-1 was a thing of joy, but it had to start somewhere... and in this post-Singularity fic, Aelfgyfu gets the beats exactly right. Here are two strong, intelligent women, discussing Cassie and the future and discovering how much they click.

"You won't mind the lack of baby pictures?"

Why This Must Be Read: Stories in which Janet has to deal with Jack's gift to Cassie never get old. And this gem, where a frustrated, exhausted Janet calls Jack to vent about the dog at zero dark thirty, is pitch perfect for them both.

It wasn't easy for Cassie or for Janet at the beginning. This is a great look at how both of them deal with it.

Why This Must Be Read: Here is a genuinely charming Cassie fic of her perspectives of Jack and friendship over the years, from early S1 through post-series. Add in some excellent Janet cameos and a tribute to opera - what's not to enjoy?

There was another set of season tickets, and those ones were a secret. Mom could know, but Cassie was absolutely not to share word of them with the rest of SG-1, not even Sam. Jack had season tickets to the opera. It was an easy secret to keep. The music, by itself would have been dismissed by her new classmates as desperately uncool, and there was nothing Cassie wanted more than to fit in, to be normal, unremarkable, just like everybody else. Well, as unremarkable as someone with hair her color could be, anyway.

Why This Must Be Read: Minor characters deserve focus, too. Here, Stringertheory offers an enchanting character sketch of six characters - four women, two men - whose lives are both touched by the Stargate and tied to the stars. From gentle to bittersweet to angsty and back again, each of these is a deft portrait of the characters we meet and then often forget after the episode ends.

There are so many small moments that created the path her life has taken. Some of them were missteps or stumbles, but they were all heading in the same direction: toward the stars.

reccer's note: yes, the last few paragraphs suggest a bit of Sam/Jack in Cassie's eyes, but it's years in the future and solely from her perspective, so my gen glasses can remain firmly in place. YMMV.
