Link: Four things Vala would miss about Earth if she left & one that she wouldn't

Why This Must Be Read: This is an excellent character study of Vala as outsider, considering her options and the people she's met on Earth. Her thoughts on Sam are my favorite, but they're all very well done with stellar characterization!

Vala had a series of escape plans worked out even before she stepped through the Gate that first time to Daniel's world, plans that were discarded and replaced on her initial evaluation of the layout of the SGC. As her stay with the Tau'ri went on, the constant calculations for strategic withdrawal running through her head became a soothing background noise. A jarring note introduced itself, though, when she realized how much she would miss what she would be leaving behind.

He thinks, dimly, that he misses the man he was... but he's fairly certain he remembers the man he was would have sold his left kidney for the chance to know half of what he knows now, gunshots or no.

Why This Must Be Read: I could try to be pithy and summarize this as "Vala and Jonas bond over being tortured by the Ori," but this story has much greater depth than that. It's an honest, clear-eyed look at a long, painful recovery from abandonment, pain, and loss of hope. This is a perfect Vala and an excellent Jonas, with bonus well-characterized Sam, dealing with the fallout of Langara's fall to the Ori. It feels very real, and very well done.

Why This Must Be Read: I adore fics that explore the remarkable friendship between Teal'c and Daniel. This is early, early S1 - post The Enemy Within - that features Teal'c and Daniel as two outsiders in a crowd, considering cultural conflicts and hoping to build some bridges together. Lovely stuff, all round!

Teal’s stood silently at parade rest, finally offering, “It is a temperate evening.”

Daniel frowned at him. “What?”

“I have observed that many of your people begin a conversation with meaningless exchanges concerning climate.”

“Oh, well.”

The silence stretched out again.

Why This Must Be Read: In that nebulous time of transition between the end of S8 and the beginning of S9, all of SG-1 - Jack, Sam, Teal'c, Daniel, and Jonas - achieve a rare moment of togetherness to contemplate their uncertain future.

I like the friendships, the reluctance to drift away, the tentative anticipation of where they might find themselves going. Add the bittersweet coda of a certain throwaway line from S10, and you'll find yourself wishing that the teaminess they share would have a way to last forever.

Why This Must Be Read: There is genuine sweetness in this, as a desk-bound Daniel gets some nostalgic time off-world and reflects a little on how far he - and the SGC - have come.

The ruins on P4Y-771 had been discovered during a routine investigation. “They hoped to find weapons grade naquada,” Weston’s report read. “Instead, they found a temple. I was thrilled. They ... weren’t.”

Why This Must Be Read: Powerful and painful, this is a stark, vivid painting of Teal'c's life as First Prime to Apophis. Canon tells us that Teal'c's rejection of the Goa'uld was a long, struggling process; this bleak character study is another step along the way.

Why This Must Be Read: Once upon a time, I recced Beatrice Otter's painfully powerful The Weight of Non-Existent Years. Here is the remix of that story, told from Sam's POV: much less angst, with the same stellar characterization, and a tribute to a beautiful friendship.

How do I bear this reminder of the symbiote, of Jolinar, of naquadah, of the enemy inside me? With feet planted and shoulders squared. How do I better accept insults from so-called superiors without the temptation to lose my composure every time? With irony added to the hard eyes, and no actual deference, although my chin is up. How do I deal with the utter absurdity of an alien race? With a raised eyebrow and deadpan delivery, perspective and the sucker-punch remark. How do I face the death of friends? With mourning, and respect, and persistence in the face of absence. Indeed. In deed.

Why This Must Be Read: Here is a fantastic look at Sam and Jack in the overtly polite social battlefield of a USAF function, with Jack solidly offering a teammate his support. Sam's thoughts are spot-on and the characterization is perfect. This is Sam and Jack's friendship at its best, with sharp humor and understanding that makes reading this a real pleasure!

"I don’t think we've been introduced," says the Colonel, so bold that Sam finds herself struggling to hide a smile. "Colonel Jack O'Neill, sir. I'm Major Carter's commanding officer on our current project. Unfortunately for Jacob's unborn grandkids, she's far too valuable to our work right now."

Why This Must Be Read: I have a massive soft spot for Fallen AUs that allow us a deeper exploration into the enigma that is Arrom. This version eventually gets us back into canon, but diverges into a longer time for amnesiac!Daniel with the nomads, including a side-trip to a lost Abydos and the search for himself when he doesn't quite understand what he's seeking. It's a sort of outside perspective of Daniel, with Daniel himself serving as the outside POV, and an interesting read.

They tell him they found him in the outskirts of the city, tell him he must have fallen from the sky. They tell him a lot of things, and he has little else to believe.

Why This Must Be Read: This shiny new fic is exactly what it says: five times Walter, from Season 8 and onwards, wishes George Hammond was still running the SGC - a bit of wry humor, a generous dose of angst, and Walter as the observer of events. Definitely well worth reading!

Sometime in the middle of SG-1's third mission as a trio, he poked his head into O'Neill's office. "Colonel Carter just called in their check-in, right on time. She said all's clear."

O'Neill blinked at him a moment before biting out a gruff "Thanks," but as Walter eased the door shut he didn't miss the soft sigh of relief. Back at his station, he added a note to the desk log: New task: email O'Neill when SG-1 checks in

Why This Must Be Read: Sometimes SG-1 loses, and sometimes it's the fault of individual choices. Luckily, Daniel has Sam to help pick up the pieces afterwards.

This is bleak and bittersweet, as Sam and Daniel, with perfect characterization, face their failures and the desperate need to just keep going. It's not a happy fic, but it rings all too true and is well worth the read.

Sam is too tired to think that far ahead. When she gets back to earth she’s going to hug Cassie extra hard for the little girl she couldn’t save, and she’ll think of the grave she and Daniel covered with grass in its green and quiet clearing, and she’ll appreciate the closure it’s given her. Then she’ll get on with the fight, whatever it brings.

Why This Must Be Read: Twelve short ficlets about the team and other characters, unexpectedly waylaid by routine matters on Earth that trigger powerful reactions to anyone involved with the Stargate. Why This Must Be Read: In this powerful piece, Sam manages to escape the hospital in Desperate Measures on her own... but she doesn't get away unscathed.

Take Sam Carter and strip away her memories, her physical health, her very sense of self. Plague her with memories that make no sense and give her no resource to discover the truth. Then sit back and watch as she still is strongly, powerfully Sam, and finds her own way back to her old self and her old life.

I love her determination, her courage, and driving need for discovery. No matter what the circumstances, that aspect of Sam never changes.
